Sympathy for the Devil?
on April 2, 2014
It’s been a long time since I polled you folks to see who you were rooting for, and a lot’s happened to possibly come between you and your former pick. I’m wondering … how do you feel about our principals now?

What about neither? They both seem caught up in their own destructive struggle without caring for much else in the world.
I’m with Ark on this one. This story isn’t about one of them winning or losing or being right or wrong.
I agree with the above- this comic is about everyone else getting hurt as a side-effect of their battle. Still, so far, Hunter comes about as far less prone to hurting random people in the pursuit of his goals. He’s still not a “good” guy, though, just more deliberate and restrained.
I’ve added an option to reflect your camp, guys.
Thank you!
On the other hand, I do kind of sympathize with both Hunter and Vane, because I can see what drives them and they’re good, complex characters – but they’re pretty violent and self absorbed, which makes them, well… not very good as far as people go.
Although, now that I think about it, it makes perfect sense for Vane, who, after all, has been reanimated through magic and is fuelled by hate, to lack any sense of empathy. Who knows how she was before?
I’m on Marshall Snowman side
Tough call. JH has picked up a lot of sympathy karma just because he seems to treat people ‘fairly’ (for a certain subset of fair), but I just have to wonder why Vane has soooooo much animosity (‘hatred’ seems lame).
I’m thinking we’ve been conditioned to accept her level of response as ‘the good guy’ ala Riddick and The Punisher…
I think she’s so disliked because she is so insanely focused on bring down JH that she doesn’t really care who or what gets in her way. JH seems more than happy to treat others kindly so long as they don’t threaten him, but Vane barely seems to acknowledge others as anything other than a means to an end- JH’s end.
I think Jonah’s death has a lot to do with Hunter’s sympathy and the lack of it for Vane
Awww, I voted Vane Black back when there wasnt third option and now it won’t let me vote neither.
Also I’d like to thank Wingsofwrath for two fantastic comments above.
I’m still more in Vane’s camp than in John Hunter’s, but I can’t say it’s not like rooting for the lesser of two evils. 🙂
Why can’t it be both? Does that make me a horrible person?
I like them both, but I always was a sucker for an anti-hero.
Napalmluck is not my website. It belongs to Chris Hazelton on MISFILE, and it’s where I usually hang my spurs. I’ve been a fan of you work since Whiskey Bend, and I’m fascinated by the dynamic. I’ve never seen the villain seperated from the “mad scientist” before. There is no clear in how Vain and Hunter get what they want, and no clear reason why either of the m want it. That actually works wonderfully. It’s clear who is supposed to be the villain, but why. Was his unforgivable evil to bring her back. Vain is admirable in the energy, ingenuity, and single minded focus, she brings to taking Hunter down. But … why? Henry is just as clearly not what he seems, but is THAT another mask? Why hasn’t he killed Black a half dozen times over by now. I can get my head around Vane not wanting to come back after a gruesome, painful death, but Hunter appears to have made that same trip, either at the same time or before she did. why did he bring her? If she is “dead inside” why does he still care … or does he? I like them both, but Hunter is the bigger mystery. I’m a fan of Kate Hepburn AND Vincent Price, but I have to give it to Price. Kate could easily play Vane Black [and enjoy it.] Vincent IS “John Henry Hunter!
Hepburn as Vane, yeah, but I see Clark Gable as Hunter.
