So the loyal son is cast out while they glorify the son who betrayed their family by his own admission? Heh, perhaps that’s why Lucius left.
So the Empire surrendered? As they still refer to the Emperor as his majesty in the paper I wonder if that means secession in the ARW style, or if its the Empire fallen?
This reminds me of stories from the American Civil War. Families torn apart by political ideals. There are still families that even to this day that vilify members who fought for the “enemy”.
Your art and story telling is…very thought provoking.
Great Art as normal Erin. Always looking for the little details you put in your art and it makes me examine each panel in detail. Thgis was a greta side story BUT I hope you come back to this one or link it to the main NTO story……PLEASE
So, the golden boy is still the golden boy, nobody ever cares about the loyal son, or gives him an ounce of respect.
As expected, everything ends in shit. What exactly could the loyal son actually do differently, though? Not try to get the love of his family? Not joined the army of the country he loved?
Maybe just… have walked away sooner.
Otherwise this is still basically a story about how life’s ridiculously unfair for him.
The younger brother didn’t start the war to kill his brother. He didn’t join the opposite side to kill his brother. He didn’t even expect to win the fight that he was ordered to do by his brother giving up.
So… pretty sure he didn’t kill him just because he’s jealous.
If that’s the case, the real moral is “never be jealous, because if you are then everything you do that involves the person you’re jealous of will be seen as about how jealous you are, and deserve no sympathy. Not like your awesome heroic brother.”
Maybe it’s just because I’m the younger sibling but I really feel for Polonius here. Lucius was the Golden Child who could do no wrong, and it seems Polonius was the neglected middle son who could do no good. No matter how loyal he was to his family and country everything he did was wrong in their eyes. He killed the golden boy and though his parents never say it it’s clear from their treatment of him that they would have rather Polonius died in Lucius place. So of course Polonius resented Lucius. How could he not? Lucius betrayed his country and his family by his own admission, while Polonius stood by his family and country. Yet even in death Lucius is still the favored child and Polonius the neglected middle son. And the worst part is Lucius never understood this. He mocked Polonius resentment and he mocked Polonius desire for the love and recognition of his parents. Even as he lay dying he mocked his brother’s desire for love and recognition. And how could Lucius empathize with his brother’s plight, when he was the favored son. Showered with love and adoration, while Polonius was left out in the rain. Even in death Lucius was the golden son who could do nothing wrong, and Polonius the the neglected son who could do nothing right.

I’d argue a similar thing happened in 2016, although it lacked the bloodshed.

I don’t know why… but I get the feeling that things would have not gone this way if he came home with his dead brother a couple of months earlier…
A sad, touching piece that’s a nice bit of refreshment from the ongoing story. Thank you, Erin.

I think the moral is more “Maybe don’t kill your brother just because you’re jealous.”

Or the moral is don’t kill your brother because your parents are ridiculously cruel to you.
awesome ; like always
It was all for nothing. He kills his brother, then his army surrenders.
Yeah, but from the sound of it his brother wanted to die anyway, so…yeah.
Only one thing left to do… burn that mansion down!
outstanding
