I really like the feeling of this page and the colors and textures. It never ceases to amaze me how perfect you are at setting a mood with your palate (and the panel dividers).
Okay, now that I have a little more time to comment I got to say, WOW! Erin, what a great opening scene. So many elements of our world blending, and clashing at the same time. I love it, and admire your work sincerely.
Where do I begin? Well, the boys in blue are advancing through what appears to be an open field with heavy woods flanking them to their left. While not scene in this first panel, there could be more woods to the right. A perfect set up for an ambush as these guys are wide open targets.
The second panel with the wonderfully ornate tree branch scroll work is so reminiscent of the framing of text or photo of the 1800’s which to Annie’s point helps set the mood.
In the woods await the opposition to the federals. GREAT! The back story I…WE have been waiting for. Erin, this looks like another incredible chapter of NTO. But I could be wrong about that though. Although I hope I’m not.
And, Oh hell yes. I do see Norris in the character with the binoculars as par SoF’s observation. I just love this stuff. Look at those troopers with there “Hardy” hats. So much like our own GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) in the American Civil War. Erin, you are so sharp kid. :))
I’ll bet 10% of the money I’m going to earn from catching Hunter that our good plague doctor makes an appearance. Erin’s cross pollination between stories adds depth to the world, and shows other people have stories besides the main characters.
I want a new edition of Deadlands books with Erin doing the illustrations.

I second that Annie. 😉
Looks like we have a Firefly vibe going, with Zoë being Zoë, and being…Chuck Norris?
Since evidently I can neither spell nor type, let me try again:

I love Deadlands! I bought the first few books when it came out but sadly never got to play…
New characters! Excitement! Possibility! Zounds!
Shiny!!!
wow, great page. I love it.
Am I mistaken, or do we see two Arkwrights about to face off?
I wonder if the name has a deliberate symbolic meaning.
Well that is one gorgeous page.
Are the green spots on the trees and the ambushers moss or light that filters through the foilage?
Random, I believe it is the light filtering through the trees.
