Poor Samurai Jack, in how many seasons he couldn’t kill Aku? And this fine lady does it in all of ten seconds.
You called this visually simple? It was fantastic.
And I love her expression in the fourth panel. Mr. Author, you may have died a foolish, highly avoidable death, but it seems you have unleashed a true and powerful heroine on the world.
Hmm, wonder of she will end up o the trail of Hunter and Black? The lawsnowman may have style, but the results leave something to be desired.
It’s highly probably she saved his soul as well, since the entity that he made the deal with is dead. Does that mean he saved himself? All in all he might not regret the deal. Although its not proven its truly destroyed or just set back for a while till it finds its way back to earth (or gets summoned again). Leaving her creator on the floor is kinda cold though. Even dead as he most likely is.
Cold seems to be written into her character though. Not many people would embrace their victims, evil or not before dispatching them. She’s done her duties to her human progenitor, avenged the writer, and now there’s nothing left there for her to do.
Either this, or she really doesn’t know who or what he is. Presumably she can’t do anything to help him, and we don’t know how aware she is of her origins. @ J. H. Sorrow: I kind of hope she doesn’t enter the main story directly. I love this as a standalone, and I like it ending open, like this. 🙂
WONDERFUL! Simply magnificent. The demon got the soul he wanted but also Hoist By His Own Petard (capital letters for being a trope).
We all said the story’s weakest point was its being predictable: the writer was going to so easily fall into the demon’s trap because of his obsession. Practically everyone saw this way ahead of time. This was forgiven because of the amazing art.
But now, this unforeseen twist turns that so-called “flaw” into a redeeming- perhaps even necessary- twist. You hoodwinked us, Ms. Mehlos. You did it masterfully. You did it to conceal AND heighten the effect of that beautiful surprise ending. Only by the second to the last page did we get an inkling that all was not what it seemed but by then you HAD us, your readers.
My hat’s off to you accompanied by a low bow. No wonder you got nominated for the Eisner award. This is a guarantee that your webcomic will long be worth visiting. Thank you for your work.
Well, there may be demons in the world as well, but I suspect there are also angels. And while the demon was quite present, there’s may have been a certain Someone else near the author at all times…
Hi, I stumbled upon Ur work by accident a week ago and I keep coming back.
I went through Ur archive like through a good book – in one go and not breathing. Thank You.
As many have said already, this was no simple art in this filler. The visual distinctiveness on both filler and main story is so cool that if U weren’t doing your own fantastic projects I’d ask you to illustrate idea of my own. At least then it would have art going for it, considering my idea is mediocre…
I’m looking forward to new chapter, return of Genevieve and day that Diamond will end up in full steam-punk body.
You know I think that since the authors soul was used to bring Genevieve to life,I think that she IS the author reborn, So she takes revenge and walks away leaving her former self behind! What ya think Ms. Squidbunnie?
P.S. I would love to do a drawing of Genevieve pleeeeese?
Mistah Autah lives in Genevieve’s blood, as Genevieve lived in Mistah Autah’s dreams. The author may be dead in body but seems to me it is very much alive in spirit. Genevieve’s spirit.
I love that even in this fantastical setting, the flair of Genevieve’s outfit causes her to stand out like the imaginary character that she is; a Weird Western superhero. 😮
It was definitely brilliantly and beautifully done, but when you consider how visually simplistic it is compared to the main comic, and how it was such a simple, short and sweet storyline (albeit with an unexpected twist), it’s easy for it to be considered comparatively “minor”.
It’s sort of like a Quantum Physicist taking a break to work on some Honors Physics-level problems, and having an audience that can barely do regular middle-school physics. If that makes sense.
Being simpler does not mean being less. I guess it’s a matter of what does every one likes most, but I, personally, appreciate more this short story because it presents a beautiful story “naked”, as it were.
There’s nothing that distracts me from the beauty it’s got, both in the writing and in the artwork. Therefore I don’t consider it a “minor work” but only a brilliant short story, as brilliant as NTO.
I don’t know if you are into poetry, but sonnets are said to be one of the most difficult poetic forms because they have to say everything they have to say in just 14 verses, and with strict metric and rhythm rules. Even if longwinded epics are more grandiose, little sonnets are better 😉
Brava! A wonderful Faustian tale with a twist. I must say that the demon is as unobservant as the poor author was unwary. I’m glad of it, though. Fantastic!
Awesome! I loved the whole arc, and thought the result was just as polished as the main comic.
So the moral of the story would be… don’t get complacent? Both the Writer and the Demon thought they were in complete control of their respective situations and paid the ultimate price for their mistaken assumptions…
Looking at his character and how he wrote her I hold a smidgen of doubt regarding your assumptions on his thoughts, considering the genre he was writting in the first place. We have only read the words spoken and not what was going through their minds. It is only our dear squidbunny who really know the whole story behind the story and I bet she isn’t talking. XD
My personal guess on his reaction on first meeting the demon, translated into 21st nomenclature, would have been something along the lines of “Oh ####, I am so dead” and went from there!
The character of Genevieve is most definitely worth starring in her own comic. What an origin story; created in the mind of an author, brought to life by supernatural means to by being given his soul, setting forth on an endless crusade to dispatch evil in all it’s many forms.
I’ve been busy becoming retired so I just finished this gem that is so flawlessly polished and in such an exquisite setting. Since NTO has a defined script with a defined end, hopefully in far distant future perhaps I will be around for Genevieve’s adventures to similarily unfold. Pretty please? With sorghum on it? Hunh???
Latecomer here… and so impressed with that final twist of the tale. This is a perfectly crafted, self-contained short story.
It also makes an excellent origin story for a mysterious heroine who goes about vanquishing evil! Whose memories of her early life are odd, as if she had read them from a book… and who feels as if she must have been torn from her own world and brought into this one by that demonic shade, who foolishly had no fear of her, as if he had no idea who she was.
No matter. It made it blessedly easy to dispatch the foul creature. And this alternate reality she finds herself in, it seems to need her just as much as the one the shade has pulled her from.
She will miss her friends and companions, but …time to be about it. Her life’s work, whichever world she may find herself in.
Alternate occupation for Genivieve: Evil postmistress…
…because she’d ‘dispatch evil’.
Amirite? 😀
You. go over to the corner and hang your head in shame

Yes, it does evoke that bit of Twilight Zone [nothing to do with sparkles kids] in the telling – would make for a great episode.
A great stand alone story and iff there ever was a need for a new series this would be a great opening chapter.
As for being cold, the writer did pour his soul into her, so to say.
….
just…
Helllllllll yesssssssssss.
That was fantastic. Just perfect.
WONDERFUL! Simply magnificent. The demon got the soul he wanted but also Hoist By His Own Petard (capital letters for being a trope).

Lady you are something else. This was very cool.
**Yay, Bravo, Auteur, Auteur!!!*
As a very long time reader of fantastic ~literature~ I can give no higher praise than I did not see that coming.
AWESOME!

No need to ask permission & I’d love to see it!
Love this ending!! and the art is dynamic, fantastic, and as always, original. 😀 THANK YOU!
Thank YOU!
Wow, looking forward to seeing more of her in the future . . . please?
Mistah Autah lives in Genevieve’s blood, as Genevieve lived in Mistah Autah’s dreams. The author may be dead in body but seems to me it is very much alive in spirit. Genevieve’s spirit.
A lady to die for, huh?
This is certainly not the ending I was expecting in the beginning. Heh heh!
Now THAT is a knoife!
I love that even in this fantastical setting, the flair of Genevieve’s outfit causes her to stand out like the imaginary character that she is; a Weird Western superhero. 😮
And are those raven wings on her hat?? Even better. xD
And so it ends.
This really was an amazing story and I hope we get more of these characters (don’t know how that would work out) in the future.
Wonderful work. I’m here wondering how could you consider this a “minor work” or a “filler”, and I know I’m not the only one.
Beautifully drawn and cleverly written. Brava!!

I love the ending. I love the story. Beautifully done. 🙂
ooh, SUPER MAGNIFICENT.
That is all.
This was a fantastic story, I’d love to see more of Genevieve in the future (maybe a cameo in the NTO universe???)!
The character of Genevieve is most definitely worth starring in her own comic. What an origin story; created in the mind of an author, brought to life by supernatural means to by being given his soul, setting forth on an endless crusade to dispatch evil in all it’s many forms.
A story begging to be told.

While the monster made from the gris-gris normally kills the idiot, I do like the twist in the tail of this.
What a great story! I am surprised, though that in all this time no one mentioned that he should have gotten the soul contract in, uh, writing…
Going through another re-read and hit this story again… Can we please get a comic for her going? Maybe once John and Vane’s tale is told? Pweeeease?
heh dumbass. didn’t even read the book before trying to be clever
