I always wondered if something like this would work.
All I could guess is that you would spend the first third of eternity in hell and then the other two thirds in heaven (I am forced to assume heaven otherwise why would Satan bargain for your soul if he is just going to get it anyway. Assuming it is Satan of course). And since 1/3 of infinity is infinity that means that you are in hell forever. That or you spend 3 days in hell and then 6 days in heaven and then repeat the cycle.
I love the facial expressions on this page, particularly on panels 2 to 4… You can tell the gri-gri is genuinely amazed in panel 3 at Mr Authah’s proposal 🙂
I think [?] it has a fairly perjorative meaning in standard French; the demon speaks Cajun-flavored French, though, wherein it’s my understanding “canaille” is sort of a slang term for tricky/sneaky/clever.
It’s not slang, and it’s not really offensive (‘canaille’ is how I call my cat, for instance) but it suit the situation anyway. The closest translation I could think of is “mischievous”.
It seems a not too far off translation would be “rascal”. Like you said, Songbird, not really a pejorative word nowadays. I think it was taken more seriously in the Middle Ages, its meaning kept changing through the time.
By the by, the “Très” before this “canaille” isn’t really good french, I’d suggest a “Quelle” (roughly: “What a”…), more commonly used in that kind of sentence…
I guess any time you think you can make a bargain like this you are at the least at a metaphorical crossroads–you’d think he’d ask to be a successful author too!
manI tell you making bargans with demons is a big mistake, believe me I know from experience and……uh oh it’s found me a again I gotta run! Oh by the way, love the story!

Correction: I should have said “demon” instead of “gri-gri”. And, while we are at it, maybe I should have said “cranial expressions” too 🙂
I can’t stand just how amused the demon is, mocking the Author like that. Eet’s too much! xD
I thought it’d just let the Author dig his grave and be done with it, but I guess it’s having too much fun to stop. 😈
What’s the French he says before “a reliable writing implement”? I tried a couple online translators and they gave me wildly different answers.

And he even gives you a second chance to reconsider. How could this possibly go wrong?
And I hope that, no matter how reliable the pen is, he has plenty of ink. No need to make him make a second trip.

ok…yeah…he /totally/ deserves that. why would he continue with this?
