Shot through the leg *might* be survivable. She got a tourniquet on very quickly, and given some of the weird ass surgery she’s done like turning her horse into a steam punk cyborg I could believe she might survive it.
That one through her torso? Yeah, that’s right through the liver, renal aorta, spleen, the works. That’s way worse than catching it front on because all of the organs it passes through (not that’s great either.) That’s 100% lethal, she will need a literal miracle or some sort of supernatural assistance to survive this one.
The detective gave her a double pneumothorax … in hindsight it’s obvious he should have simply walked around the corner and kept on waling out of sight. Our anti-heroine is clearly dead again, but didn’t know it yet. I wonder if her reanimating demon will inhabit someone else now?
The first panel shows a light brown glove grasping at dry grass. That would be Mark. (The Inspector’s gloves are much darker.) Mark may get in one last shot. Flint was knocked over by the concussion, but he’s still in the game, unless he just walks away. Amaranth may approach close enough to take Vane’s air away and suffocate her — but she’s a goner anyway. Stone Hears Nothing and Cyclonedance are coming aboard Eagle’s Eyes, but they owe her nothing. For their separate reasons they’re looking for Coyote/JHH. Meanwhile I think Jasper is around somewhere; we never saw him die or run off. The end is near anyway!
Mark’s definitely dead, largely turned into a pinkish mist when Diamonds had a RUD event. (Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly.) That hand may be all that’s left of him in solid form. Ironically his rifle may have prevented his hand from disintegrating.
Oh dear… that’s a nasty hit. Hell of a shot to take right though the torso, I do hope Missus Hunter has a Deus Ex Machina up her rolled-up sleeves… 😮
Welp, that don’t look good. At this point there’s a morbid fascination to see wherever any of the characters will survive. Lord (coyote) only knows none of them are nice people, but it’s still kind of a bummer to see them slaughter each other witch such reckless abandon, even though we knew this was coming for a good while now (roughly from page one of the first volume). Of course, there is also the magic JHH did on the last page of “Short End”, and who knows what that one does…
Miss Black was a nice lady. The father of the boy she killed was a good man. Amaranth hasn’t done anything immoral that I know of, and may be an ally to the reanimated woman because she’s a curiosity. Mark’s only sin was being a soldier, and his brother, too. Their livelihoods were stolen from them by serial killers.
JHH is the only monster I see, besides that man in spectacles.
While I agree that JHH is pretty much the most monstrous of the lot at this juncture, I stand by my assertion the others are not especially nice – nice people do not go in for bounty hunting and/or revenge…
When it comes for Professor Crawford, sure, he hasn’t done anything immoral yet and that we know of, but also there must be a reason he’s here and I bet it’s not due to an overwhelming urge towards charity and goodwill towards man.
Finally, Miss Black absolutely was not a nice lady in life either. Nice ladies do not operate on their significant others against their wishes nor engage in unethical experiments…
We have met entirely different nice ladies in our lives. I for one greatly enjoy the mechanical augmentations that were forced upon me as I lay face down on an operating table needing to scream but being too paralyzed to do so. It’s either that or a slow descent into insanity as my cyborg ass slowly kills all humanity…
OK! I’ missed a Beat Here! Why is No One Commenting on the Inspector’s Wound? I notice a few Things:
o His Weapon makes a “POP-ing” Sound [more like High Pressure Steam than a Chemical Explosion.]
o His Damaged ….. Undercarriage made the Identical “SssPLODE” Sound as Diamond’s Ruptured BOILER.
o It was not Vane’s Ammo that Exploded, Her First Shot Grazed His Shoulder, and Zipped by without Detonating.
o The Inspector’s Innards are GLOWING with Something, that is the Worng Color for Cherenkov Radiation, but may be This World.s Analog.
Taken Together, The Inspector may be Another of Vane’s Lab Rats, or a Spark, on her Level, and not a Poser, who is too Heavily Dressed for This Abominable Heat.
Um …. Short End took place entirely in the Desert, so there’s no way to tell from that. All of The Tumbling JHH, the White is in the Sky! It looks, to me, like Morning Mist. I could be Wrong. I’m as Likely to loose track of the Season, as I am to think Everyone in this Story is Overdressed. I’m still curious about what the Inspector’s Regalia are Concealing.
Great analysis, but that place looks kind of cold. The clothing and vegetation are clues. Not all semi-deserts and deserts are in South Texas (welcome to Manitoba! … or North Dakota’s Badlands or China’s Flaming Mountains!), and even Texas can get chilly.
Dayum! If DeFoix had had a double-action revolver it would have been all over, and he’d still have two good legs. As it is, Vane got off two shots with her automatic while he was busy cocking his piece.
well those look like a lot of lethal gunshot wounds

Oh geeze…
Well, Bolivian army ending is kind of a classic for western?
Though I believe two people and a horse are incoming.
Alas, o ignominious fate
Dear Ben,
Don’t have a lot to say other than “Good Heavens I love your art!” and that I really just wanted to use your name.
Signed, Longtime appreciator of your work.

I think that’s less grasping and more “lying on the floor, weapon konlonger in hand”
My my guess, Mark’s dead.

That magic is likely what he used to pull the demon out of Vane to have a chat with Coyote on page six of The Tumbling JHH.

last frame is just a good stand alone picture of a myriad of emotions! could be a great avatar or somethin’

Abominable heat? There’s still a little snow left on the ground. (See Tumbling JHH page 3.)

Too bad she didn’t get to enjoy her new life for long.
The art such a treat.
