I think the level of magical exertion it took to do this may have been too much for his body. We don’t see any hints of his soul here, just his putting hers back into her body. It’s not 100% clear, but looks to me like Vane’s skin has normal coloring again. Perhaps with Coyote’s power he was able to bring Vane back to life, but lost his own in exchange?
I believe her soul was in the timepiece. He dies here as a result of the shotgun blast a few pages back, as he would have done then had he not powered through with a final burst of magical power to finish what he’d started.
You all do see that this has been the story all along don’t you? This has all been John Henry Hunters quest to bring Vane truly back to life. Vane on the other hand has been of 2 minds with the same goal. The demon trapped within has wanted freedom and Vane has wanted to be allowed to die. However she was the first to try to cheat death in keeping him alive.
Tough call space cowboy. Way I see it, he’s blamed himself for her state way longer than she has for what she did to his spice. It’s a tough call to be sure.
So, their love for each other lead to the murder of plenty of people, the death of a number of animals, lots of pain, something akin to rape of a blood brother and likely some of the other people Hunter used along the way, and even more property damage. And people wonder why those interested in old ways of thinking are unimpressed when moderns say “but LOVE!” Almost makes one hanker for arranged marriages … except imagine people like these two doing the arranging.
Something like that but in this case they keep resurrecting each other rather than committing suicide.
Keith – as for this being a tough call I have got to have sympathy for Hunter. Vane murdered someone to transplant the spine into Hunter without feeling a bit of remorse. She has murdered carelessly while playing the victim the entire time. Most of the deaths have been the result of her trying to corner Hunter and people getting caught in the cross fire. She believes her actions will dam her soul if there is an afterlife but feels no guilt. John Henry Hunter on the other hand feels responsible and guilty about everything but will not admit it to anyone.
Vane didn’t take that spine from anyone else, it was an artificial one she created herself. Her crime there wasn’t killing someone and stealing their organs, it was crippling JHH and then doing surgery on him without his consent.
Everyone seems to forget that before the spine surgery he’d done some sketchy things to save her from that purple plague(I forget the details and apologize for that)
I only noticed now that our recently revivified (now, Demon Free!) revenant patched the knees on her trousers. I like that even moe than being reminded that she fashioned an artificial spine for JHH.
His soul was in her? The demon would have eaten it though…

I guess she’ll be the one collecting the reward then?
YES! … Now .. are They Still Together?
As Lucifer said when he couldn’t appropriately drag Constantine’s corpse, “Ahh, the sacrifice.”

So… is this gonna end “Romeo and Juliet” or “West Side Story”??? ‘Cause that’s the vibe I’m catching here.

Ooh, well put … I don’t know why I assumed the spine was from a cadaver (I may have forgotten the relevant scene) – one she didn’t create, I mean.

I would say that this looks like she got the spine from someone before modifying it. https://nexttownover.net/comic/book09-viadolorosa/via-dolorosa-page-21/
seems more like a test run to me.
I’d agree with Spex that that was probably a trial run and/or research into how the spine hooks up.
Coyote implies Hunter has a backbone of surgical steel here:

This spine replacement is also the source of his fire abilities:

And Vane provides a scalpel to use in the dowser when Professor Crawford wants to find Hunter:

Hunter is counting on Vane’s residual love for him to driver her to save his life.
