Ok, Dog!Hunter’s face in panel 3 really cracks me up for some reason. I love it.
I am not sure why he is being so defensive about this whole conversation. Sure, Coyote’s way of hitting around the bush may be patronising, but that hardly seems reason enough to react the way Hunter is.
He’s “Aware,” [because this conversation is taking place,] that he has attracted the attention he may very soon wish he hadn’t. This is a showman’s Fear Reaction, and his bluster is an effort to CONTINUE to be “entertaining.”
Because Coyote’s probably talking about what JHH’s done with Vane. And we all know how it has turned out so far. Interestingly enough, Coyote seems to imply that it was not the first attempt JHH made, but third.
The camp at the foot of the rise. Where Vane is? Is it that Vane can see these spirit forms? Is she able to inflict death upon Jon Henry if she knows he’s in spirit form? Interesting theory if it’s possible. Hunter does not like being exposed at any level, even in the spirit world.
He’s talking about Confinement. I feel he might be talking about the fire spirit that’s partly fueling Vane. In case that is a secondary thing riding there. >.> I’m still not entirely clear in that regards.
Confinement indeed. Something so logical, procedural, in scientific research, that could interrupt greater goings-on. A confined flame may eat oxygen ’till it starves itself.
Good lord, Coyote’s somewhat vacant, receptive, *enraptured* expression in the last panel… It is like he’s happy to see John stick his neck into a mousetrap’s range.
Coyote calling out JHH so hard.
Silly human! Don’t spurn a pardon before you find out what the punishment could be!

I took it to be his third attempt at manipulating larger numbers of people, not just his love. I could well be wrong.
