This is so unspeakably sad 🙁

Whatever it is that Hunter did, it clearly didn’t go the way he wanted.

So his weak point is the neck?

Makes sense that he’s not dead yet and that’s the part of his body, i don’t think, he hasn’t been shot in.

A shot twixt the cervical vertebrae might not kill, but it would almost certainly paralyze. Since Vane did a fair amount of “engineering” to John’s spine whilst she was alive, it could be that she now wants to undo that work out of some sort of desire to balance some cosmic scales. He undid her death, so she seeks to undo his ability to move.

Such a brief time she was “fully”human again– how weary must her body be? or can it actually feel anything? This surely won’t end well ultimately.
Love the art, sad about the arc……

Okay I want to point out the magnificent detail that Human!Vane speaks in a voice in normal text, while Angeleyes!Vane speaks in italics and probably always has done so.

Went to the beginning of the story to check. It looks like the italics thing is a new thing if it has any significance.

I took another look and noticed that the hair only glows when Human!Vane was talking. As soon as the hair stopped glowing, the eyes changed back to that fiery orange and Angeleyes!Vane was back.

What I don’t understand is why he poured the monster back in. He had plainly vanquished it. But he’s already learned that resurrecting her isn’t going to help him. Yet he’s gone and done it again. A sure sign of Madness, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result!

While I doubt the sanity of either of them at this point, it seems clear that Hunter very much loved Vane, to the point that he threw away everything else he had in an attempt to bring her back, likely knowing he was dooming himself to live a life on the run with her on his heels. After all, he killed Boudreux (and presumably a number of others) to fuel the spell in the first place, and Genevieve implies she was a close friend of Hunter’s enough to be willing to teach him black magic. At this point, I think he feels like he has nothing else to lose – either he brings her back and continues the cycle and maybe succeeds in ending it (which may be what he wants the ruby thing for), or he gives up, and accepts that everything he lost and everyone he hurt was all for nothing.

Funny. I thought the exorcised demon was the cause of her fury; with it gone she shouldn’t have reverted back. So if it didn’t cause her hatred, what did? And why was the demon in her if it wasn’t the cause?

    Odd.

Human again for so short a time; – so very sad. Amazingly skilled piece of artwork though with the transition from human to the other expressed so well by Vane’s eyes.

As always Erin your art work is so incredible. How much we all look forward to it. As for John Henry and Vane, all, I can say at this point is; DAMN! I mean, just DAY-UM! O.o

Before it gets any later, Merry Christmas! 😉

Has anyone else noticed the “gears ‘n grease ‘n tin widgets” line? I’m starting to think Vane isn’t pure undead revenant and might be part cyborg. Did Vane do to herself what she did to Diamonds? That could explain the Matrix-like appearance of the demon…

DeathbyPendulum hath made me think – “How can I miss my husband” is, among other things, a horrid pun, as though the deamonic presence is in her subconscious even before it reasserts conscious control.

An impressive share! I’ve just forwarded this onto a co-worker who had been conducting a little research
on this. And he in fact ordered me breakfast due to the fact that
I stumbled upon it for him… lol. So allow me to reword this….
Thank YOU for the meal!! But yeah, thanx for spending the time to discuss this matter here on your internet site.

Funny combination, those two. I want more backstory. If I were a super doctor-inventor-vet-mechanic-engineer-biologist-genius, would I fall for a fire-breathing card shark with an uncontrol(able) sex drive who is more self-regarding than the best that the Bronte sisters could cook up among them? Huh. Spose I would if I shared Vane’s notion of “biological experiment,” and there’s no accounting for taste . . .

Anyway, seems to me that her blue eyes ain’t gonna stop turning red until he stops shooting flames from his body parts. Kinda seems fair.

    ps I do love this ride . . .

Excellent reference to the self-destructive tendencies of them Bronte sisters … but decent, sane girls like Jane Austin and Emily Dickinson died without marrying, so perhaps the self-destructive loonie girls have a point.

I have a feeling Jane Austin and Emily Dickinson had a better point- make enough money that you don’t HAVE to marry.

I’m probably wrong on this because I’ve been wrong on a lot of how the story has gone. Here it seems he imprisoned the spirit in Vane’s body, has the discussion and then that large circle of glowing I interpreted to be him releasing the spirit because the spirit seems to be the only thing driving the body, not Vane, at least not after the first moments.

Welp, this is the page that made me go and reread the entire story all over again. I’m so excited to the next page, and the page after, and the page after that…

Erin, you’ve done such a fantastic job of drizzling out the backstory over these chapters…!
