I love how the close up of Vane’s eyes looks like the voodoo demon from Genevieve drawing parallels with Hunter’s magic that (we think) turned her into an undead revenant, but then the exorcism under goes a digitalesque transformation revealing the Tron-like futuristic essence that permeates Vane’s soul.
Kudos ScholarOfFortune (and Mark – I mark thee, Mark) for noting the techy reference in the dark, seemingly vengeful, entity. Note also the pixillations dripping off her like so much extra ichor. She’s a fantasy/sci-fi borg. ‘at’s wot she is, guv’nah. Also, Phil, thanks for counting them off – though the cross/scaffold many be meaningful too, as may the serpentine chains a dangling. JuaSaysHi made a punny, below, with “ominous”. I like it. I wonder, will Mother Superior shall return with more firepower? If she does, shall it all end tragically?
Yep, going great…find your own hiding spot, this one is mine due to prior hiding behind this very substantial bit of terrain with a most expeditious escape route (not that I’ll need it, I hope).
Hmm. Well, this explains…a little. Not a lot, but something. Though that makes me wonder: was Vane ever really brought back from the dead? Or was it always that…thing?
Erin, it’s amazing what you can do without writing a single word. Your drawings speak volumes. So, is Vane free of the hell? Is John scard of his loss of control? That last panel of John eyes, a cross between fear and sorrow. Or is it hope?
What does Hunter know that we don’t know yet? did he expect this separation? was he confused too? Does he expect the extracted or freed being to be friend or foe?? what about VANE?? what will she know, do, or is she left blank, if not dead???
Huh, interesting. The black/purple squares and lines put me in mind of something digital, which almost makes this seem like a “glitch in the matrix” sort of thing. NTO has been a simulation all along! :p
I think I’ve had the same overwhelmed “wow” reaction to each new page for a while now, and I’m too much in awe to know at this point how many weeks in a row it is anymore. Just… wow.
Prediction: vengeful spirit that has been trapped in Vane is exorcised, but because the nun was interrupted the spirit will instead possess the young brother of the blood instead of being cast out like it was supposed to. Vane, restored to her loving former self, teams up with Hunter and a whole squad of other mages (the wind guy from Broken Sky for example) plus the string of lynchers and bounty hunters on their trail for an epic final battle against the newly formed Supreme BloodMage
On page 22, Hunter made it a point point out to Vane how much he missed his wife. The “tone” – or so it seems to me – is that he seems to hold her responsible.
I think Vane may be a being that’s inhabited Mrs. Hunter’s body (or what’s left of it). That could explain why Hunter looks so concerned on page 25 when he pulls Vane down from the post / cross.
That answers a few questions about Vane. Something else was in there besides Vane.
“Preacher”: I toldja. Sin. Purge. Toldja.
It looks like the preacher lady did some good.
One wonders what Vane will be like now.
I assume…dead. I presume this is what was keeping her “undead”, really.
Speaking of, daaaaaayumn!
Literally damned … and how did that creature of shadow subsume(consume?!?) nearly all of the creature of light it had been living within?
Unless that is Vane (or what’s left of her).

Maybe Genevieve can arrive and take out the demon.
These seem distinct:
1) Vane’s body
2) A body of light
3) A covering of dark
Only the 3rd seems capable of action at this point.

The final line of the exorcism is the Mother Superior yelling: “sudo rm -rf /”
@ScholarOfFortune
i tink the ritual did made vane return to her original form
is mostly because the simbol vane has on her butt is the same as the horse hunter placed the same mark on

Nope, not omenous at all, lookin’ good, yup. *hides*

“Omenous” is either brilliant by design, or a happy accident.

I think the thing is all of vane’s evil and hatred.
It consumed her very being at the point of death and lead the corpse to walk the earth seeking it’s revenge.
Beautiful and horrifying at the same time. Wow.

Might NTO be westworld?

OH. MY. GAWD.
I… don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t this. I… well, don’t know what to say.
Hunter did say it was no angel fire they were using… maybe whatever ritual they used made things worse?
What if the preacher put something else in Vanity. Like the old woman who swallowed the spider!
Now two questions: was Vane dead; will she die or return to death now? I don’t want her to die, but . . .
On looking at this again, I fear we may be nearing the close of our tale here.

Wonder how effective that sword of flame will be.
