Blood sacrifice was in the cards and Hunter’s spell upon the priest called him to the scene in time to interfere? Probably not, but whatever is happening, … Eeek!
I am struck all over again by what a manly man Hunter is–and so clean-shaven even after hours sleeping! Meanwhile, someone is about to burn away the post and the ropes and set her free, and this time Vane’s gonna really have cause to wreak havoc!
I’ve heard of purple rain and yellow snow, but I’ve never heard of magenta fire.
Not like any exorcism I’ve heard testimony about. (Goodness knows there were enough possessed people in Oregon back during the occult invasion in the 1980s and 1990s.)
Erin’s flashback got me to thinking about personalities and magic in the early part of the story. Is Vane, a creature animated by Hunter’s fire magic, perhaps trying to claim all of it? If so, that would make the priest lying there a real problem for Mother Superior … not that Vane before her and Hunter after don’t give her troubles enough already.
Oh Erin, please tell me you’ll at least consider telling these two’s story pre-chase days after they finally reach “The Next Town Over?”
I honestly liked seeing them as man and wife and wouldn’t mind seeing it all in your gorgeous, color saturated glory.
My working theory is: she died, he did his arcanery/hex-mastery on her to bring her back in a rather typically Faustian way, she’s not pleased in the least to be party to something Hellish in her and he’s got some obscure plan that will fix everything (if he can pull it off as he runs away).
Is that the priest that Hunter seduced that’s lying on the ground?
Sure looks like it. Thanks. I completely missed that.
that poor guy.

Ooh boy, we’re getting serious about that exorcism, huh?
Her shirt got fixed

Thanks for the avatar, Erin. I don’t recognize which character it is, though.
You’re welcome, although they’re randomly assigned. It’s Eli from book 3 though! Specifically this page: https://www.nexttownover.net/?p=595
Thanks.
Gonna bet on explosion of religious magic blows away the cross but doesn’t change vane.
Then she starts plying her trade….

I’m sorry, it’s been such a long time since I’ve reread the whole thing– remind me why JHH was bedridden all those years ago?
I don’t think it’s ever been fully nailed down. One possibility is Violet Fever.
There was a wrench lying next to his body. I’m pretty sure that Vane clubbed him in the back of the neck. Which is why she replaced his spine.
