So, has she been “missing” for longer than this craziness has been going on, or is this all due to the medical mishaps that have taken place?? Very effective mood here, and details as always are phenomenal!
Part of me wonders if she has been possessed by a demon or some such… or if I need to reread the entire series for the umpteenth time because I’ve forgotten again, hah.
Those two conditions are HIGHLY compatible, and freeing her of the demon that was needed to revive her may not make her less likely to still want revenge for his strayin’ ways. You know, like the two lovers in Baby Driver … imagine if one had cheated on the other, even in a way designed to help the cheatee.
My working theory has been she died. Succumbed to the illness she was treating in others/helped make. He, missing her and full of arcane shenanigans, conjured up something from Hell to bargain with or make her whole. Perhaps there’s a bit of Hell in her now and she doesn’t appreciate that. Perhaps there’s almost nothing in her at all anymore and it’s (mostly) all demon animating her and chasing him through the west.
Either way, he’s clearly got a plan and is acquiring reagents as he runs from her (perhaps leading her somewhere) in order to “free” his wife.
I love this story and it’s overtaken my other favorites as #1. The art is gorgeous and the mystery fresh. I look forward to the revelation of all, but also dread the day it ends…
She’s more like a Revenant, I think. Vane seems to have intimate knowledge of Hunter, and a very specific goal of killing him for his misdeeds. That doesn’t strike me as very like a demon possession. She’s still herself, just really, really pissed off.
In classical daemonology, at least Zoroasttrian, Hindo, Jewish or Christian deamonology … that’s VERY like a demon, actually. Beings of pure thought, upset with the material world and its impurities so much that they resist the Almighty are the last two variants, and they perfectly embody some sin … which could even be a overdoing judgement. Remember Lewis’ White Witch citing the law, and demanding she be allowed to punish transgressors?
At the start of this comic I never thought it was a love story…..and the further down the rabbit hole we go, its turned into an epic love saga. Keep it coming Erin
They say love is blind, but this love for what she’s become is nuts.
Imagine coming home from the opera house after entertaining the crowds. Open the door and see blood everywhere. “Hi Honey, I’m home. Who’d you kill today?”
(That orange light coming from inside her eyes really adds to the impression of total evil inside Vanity)
The courtship was characterized by burning down buildings and towns, rifle shots, shotgun shots, disembowelment, falls that would kill Wile E Coyote, multiple random victims who were unlucky enough to be in the way, sacrificial victims, envy, destructive lust, blood, guts, gore, burns, and other pleasantries…
I’ve been rereading through the comic and I found this little gem back in one of the early chapters. https://www.nexttownover.net/?p=392 Something look familiar?
I despise both of your main characters. Not because they are poorly written, or shallow, or one-dimensional. They are none of those things, a testament to your skill, hard work and talent.
I hate them because they are horrible people and need to be ended for the safety and well people of everyone who is not them.
I am –> deeply Marianas Trench <– impressed you could keep me interested in these walking bundles of narcissism long enough to wonder what's going to happen to them beyond burning in hell.
This is a damn work of //genius//, and I'll be here until the end.
Just noticed on the last two panels the hand on Hunter’s neck. On the first one, it’s Vane’s hand, on the other, it’s Hunter’s hand, as Vane’s no more (yes, I’m actually in the team that believes that Vane’s body and memories are possessed by a deamon). It shows how badly he misses her.
Wow, what a juxtaposition. This page, just… wow.
Hey, thanks!

Appreciate the comment, Karyl, as always! <3
A dolorous, painful way indeed.
More, please.
I got you, sir/madam, and thanks!

Her behavior has never struck me as being possessed by deamon but as has having unfinished business such revenge.

Erin, you are worth every painful wait.

That scene was just so sad
And…the point goes to Vane.
Troubled souls.
The splash of white hair at his nape is a terrific touch… must be from the spine surgery. Fantastic detail as always!
Seems like she is unmoved.

Thanks, Stevoid! I will!
