Looks like the shootout turned out to be fairly serendipitous. But I have a feeling our reverend mother here will know disappointment soon enough.

Anybody can remind me when that horrible scar on his shoulder happened? I am drawing a blank right now…

I am wondering whether there is any significance in the little we can see from the library. For example, how is Hunter choosing the books to look at? The first one he takes appears to be random (it’s very orange, yet we can’t see it in the first panel), pointing towards the fact that they were keeping/treating him in a room full of books with arcane knowledge (which might make sense if that is the nature of his treatment by the Brotherhood). Second book has some sort of symbol on its side, which features very prominently in all panels where it’s too far away to be recognized, but it’s hidden in the two close ups. And is there any meaning to the “Ministry of …” book that was right next to it, or is it just some discreet world building? So many questions.

Well, both of the books he pulled have thongs or straps to keep them shut – journals , perhaps?

Most medieval books had, as far as I know (but might be misinformed) straps, locks or similar, to keep the parchment pressed together between the cover-plates. Might be the books are really old, or made up to seem so.

I thought the horrible scar on his shoulder was from when Vane got him with the alkali bullet? He got the wound tended by the plague Dr? Whose…. Dog and kid they killed….

Vane’s alkali bullets, I think, which left him in this shape: https://www.nexttownover.net/?p=1054

So very optimistic that you understand who you’re dealing with there, Sister–I fear me that you will be soon sorely disappointed, in hanging Vane and in Hunter’s lack of enthusiasm for your calling.
As always, impeccable art and worldbuilding!

    Oh, that satisfied smirk…
Also, it looks to me like our dear Mr. Hunter’s true interest lies in the journal-like volume, and he picks up another volume to conceal the first when he hears the Sister approach. And to paraphrase a character from another universe: Ohh, what’s really going to bake your noodle later on is, did JHH actually plan all this just to get this book? 🙂

    Native American designs… Curious.

Frankly we haven’t seen many natives in this west so far…

They may be in areas where the Spaniards wiped them out, like most of California.

(No Spaniards. No California. Not the American West.)

          Thanks.

You mentioned New Orleans near the beginning of the comic. Does this mean the French didn’t settle it?

It would be fascinating to see a map of the world you’ve created and hint about in the comic.

My bad. I thought NO had been mentioned in the first confrontation.

And here, in this corner, representing the forces of eeevil— John Henry Black

And here, in this corner, also representing the forces of eeevil— Vanity Black.

What IS it about a tale of two such evil critters that’s so compelling? A witch and a revenant trash the world and it’s fascinating to read.

A religion based around blood and blades and surrounded Southwestern motifs … oh yeah, that’ll be just peachy!
Also, thanks for the link to the ol’ shot up and injured scene.

Could be worse. Could be like that group that practices self-flagellation in the Philippines.
