Now what’s this? Did Hunter kill this last woman in order to fuel what he did to Vane? Was she Vane’s friend? Vane – or whatever this now is – seems pretty angry that she’s dead.
And woah; Vane tries AT ONCE to get herself out of this mess.
I wonder; with this handy body here – what happens in order to Vane to gain flesh once more?
Vane is a scientist, first and foremost. In panel 6 she smashes glass objects in a sudden passion, and in panel 7 realises she should have been cut and bleeding, but she is not. Panel 8 she reaches for a cutting object, panel 9 attempts an incision on herself which she knows would draw copious amounts of blood, panel 10 she is rewarded only with liquid flame.
Boy this is an incredible page, again. Erin you never cease to amaze us with your attention to detail. This beautiful old Victorian, Dr. Black’s home? Just stunning.
Well there’s a lot of things going on here. First thing I wonder about is how come Vane is not setting things on fire where ever she walks? There’s a lot of blood in that operating room, did John Henry do something very bad here?
Vane, in her anger cuts herself on beaker and see she’s bleeding, all be it fire. Then she grabs a scalpel and cuts herself in what looks like a suicide attempt, and is really bleeding out much more flood*.
Like I said, a lot going on here. I think Vane, in her current state, should hook up with Johnny Storm. 🙂
Aaand, I’ve caught up. Had this comic in the bookmarks for who knows how long, yesterday night I thought I might as well check it. Needless to say, breezed through the archives…
Wonderful. Just wonderful. Sometimes I wish we could just stay a little while longer at the same place, and marvel at the magic (like the sun flowers, or the crystal city), but I also understand the constant journey is in itself an allegory and I’m also curious what and where will get revealed. Also, there seem to be more flashbacks recently and the pace is stepping up, so surely we are in for a treat? If only she wouldn’t try to kill John in Vane. (Duh, couldn’t resist the pun. Sry. )
Soo, just a heads up! The comic is great, and I’m looking forward to what’s there to come.
It also explains her reaction to Hunter’s supposed death on the Red Ridge Express, she seems… kind of disappointed, before returning to her original task.
What does she have to be guilty or shameful about?
Also, I took it that the dead body was a victim of Violet Fever, one that Vane failed to save. I’m assuming that she will somehow use that body to acquire an undead version of her living body, which we see that she has in the first chapter of this web comic.
But regardless, what did she do in panel 5? It looks like she tried to drink something. Water?
She is ashamed of accidentally creating a super strain of the virus. It is an irrational, unjust shame, but as Hunter’s attempt to reason with her back at the quarantined hotel proves, she has committed herself to that perception. She wants to die, and will do almost anything to make that happen.

She was just testing a sudden observation.

*Flood; a combination of fire and blood.

Called it! She wants to die from her guilt and shame, and elemental wraiths can only die when their spell master dies! Or so she thinks…
OMG. I think you’re right!

*discovers new page hoping some questions will be answered*
*reads*
*stuck with a dozen new questions*
– but such beautiful art –
After a crappy day of fighting off a nasty infection, I am rewarded with this. Thank you, Erin.
Emanon almost sounded like Vane there, for a moment. Be careful there, big guy.
Thanks, Hoss – er, Honz.
Doing better now.

She’s angrily smashing stuff, I think.

Is this the woman in New Orleans (sorry I’m blanking on her name) who died mysteriously?
Is that Boudreaux?
Oh, that’s the chick from the Genevieve comic
