I love, in the 7th panel, the woman next to JHH whispering disapprovingly to the person next to them. Her expression screams accusatory innuendo about JHH’s black magic and murder.
So he raised her from the dead…and then just left her behind? He didn’t even stop to see what would happen? It’s ‘The Modern Prometheus’ all over again!
Alternatively, did he expect her to follow and then flee desperately when he realised something went wrong in the process?
So, Vane doesn’t gets the watch. Something about that watch is very important, and maybe I missed that somewhere in the past pages. John lays Vane on the satanic (?) symbol on the floor before the fireplace. Vane looks like she has just died and John with a sorrowful on his face, brands her. Hunter is in league with the devil.
Then we see Vane rise up from the funeral pyre, never to be effected by the element. Or so it seems. I believe this is finally getting to the heart of the love/hate relationship between these two. Good stuff Erin. Love this comic.
Looks like the symbol is simply an arcane circle based on his brand initials, from a better look at it in the final scene of the previous page.
He didn’t need a circle to resurrect Hearts, but then Hearts came back as an at-will summons and not what looks like somewhere between a golem and a homunculus with a full memory, sentience, and soul.
I don’t think God/the Devil exist in this universe. I do think something went wrong with JHH’s attempt to restore life to Vane, but as to why she’s pissed at him I can’t guess. Hopefully Erin will reveal all in due time.
Be careful what you wish for … you just might get it. John is walking towards his coach in that last scene. Alarmingly incendiary, eh? Sarah’s good with the nuance.
I think she died of her special version of violet fever on this page; then JHH tried to animate her with a fire spirit when he branded her, but it didn’t seem to work properly. So he decided to bury her, but left before they lowered the casket into the ground, which is when the animation finally kicked in.
He should have been more careful when he decided to poke ‘er.
He looked so worried about it, too. I had a teacher who liked to say, “No penalty for guessing…unless you guess wrong.”
Poke ‘er? I barely know ‘er!
sorry that was bad lol

Oh? I thought she was crying…

Sarah, that’s a good question. Guess we’ll find out as this unfolds.

Thanks as always js!

Hawt stuff. Good storytelling, Erin.
Very much obliged, Em! 😀

wat.
I don’t think that’s JHH in the last panel. Coat has no mantle, and anyway JHH strolled away from the funeral: https://www.nexttownover.net/?p=271
….. who’s sarah?
So I was rereading, and I don’t know what is more ridiculous: how good your art was at the beginning, or *how much better it’s gotten*. Hats off.
Thank you kindly, RSG 🙂
So this was Hunter’s great crime: he brought her back from the dead.
Flashback to the very first pages (showing why retreads are so worthwhile): I just realized that the images are from Hunter’s POV.
Great story telling and artwork.
REREADS darn it. Autocorrect haunts me wherever I go…
