Pretty sure she cured paralysis of some sort prior to contracting the Violet Fever. From the chapter with the boy and the dog, I’m led to believe the Fever is what led to his condition; seems like she fixed him with steamtech (judging by the bolt-like portions of his spinal scarring) and used the vaccine she created to cure him, but used herself as the initial sample and infected herself with the subdermal version, killing herself in the process.
I can’t tell is all this talk is foreplay or pre-fight smack.
Nerd – Based on previous dialogue and JHH’s big spinal scar, Vane had him under sedation for a pretty hefty body refit at some point.
Vane’s comment “I may not be able to kill you presently,” combined with JHH’s “Devil Wanderer” watch, make me think he has a techno/magical regeneration system of limited duration which is why he’s so darn hard to kill. Wonder how long he has left?
And as an aside: Vane is doing a pretty good job of holding herself upright given she has a hole in her abdomen you could ride Diamond through.
If nothing else, Vane is going to take John Henry to hell with her. Is this the end of the duel between our protagonist? (Erin’s saying; “Yes, oh please God yes!”) Tune in next week for another exiting installment of, NEXT TOWN OVER-ER-ER-ER. ;))
So this is how flirting with death looks like. And by that I mean using death threats to flirt. Bravo, boss lady. The changes in their expresisons are just splendid.
Also she’s been hurtin’ him since he woke up from the ether? Ouch, so the spinal prosthesis didn’t go without a hitch. Still, it’s a spinal prosthesis and the patient isn’t dead (to much of the doctor’s chagrin)!
I have always found this story compelling for both the characters and the art-this page exemplifies EVERYTHING I love about the work Erin does–and boy is it WONDERFUL!
There’s a thin line between love and hate, as Banditfly and Xaveritus pointed out well. Also, how did the melting firearm not destroy Vane’s hand? She’s hardy, that one, and not even JefLebowsky knows how far that Revenant can keep going. The same cannot be said for the girl descending the stairs or her father descending from the Inferno … nice symbolism, that.
Now kiss…
Hunter x Vane OTP
That little detail of Vane’s gun melting in her hands.
Hunters shaded eyes in the first panel.
The sheer amount of… voice? you convey when they are talking to each other.
Vane’s smile as they are dancing/fighting in the burning barn.
Good job Erin. Good job.
Jef, if they are dancing, it’s the dance of death!
I know.
Isn’t it beautiful?
Is that supposed to be “since I woke you up from the ether,” or is there a big twist coming that I did not expect?
I also wondered, but ether is an anesthetic, and she did some kind of surgery on him, didn’t she?
flashback here
and here, his back

I missed the melting gun. Good catch JefLebowski!

I assumed the presently comment was related to her current lack of the arsenal Hunter referred to
Seeing Vane smile like that is somehow unnerving. things are spiraling out of control
“Now is the end. Perish the world.” With apologize to “Beyond the Fringe”.

They seem to have a constant love/hate relationship. She just loves hating him! Does that mean they are married? lol

Let’s not miss the father/daughter combo in the foreground of panel one. A new meaning for the word “subtle”…
Erin, the drawing in the book was absolutely fantastic! Thank you!
