He NEVER thinks it through–after the last time that she threw dynamite at him John should have warned Emma off, or had the grace to refuse to take the invitation to be alone with her. John doesn’t really strike me as very smart…she’s more wily than he will ever be. However, I am not sure he can really injure Vane permanently, which definitely leads to another set of problems. That’s a magnificently artistic if horrific effect Emma experiences, Erin–very skillfully rendered!
Sure he is. The girls presence prevents her from going all out unless she wants to make the girl a civilian casualty. So, yes, he is hiding behind a little girl.
Well, I did say RUN! Seems these two will be forever locked in mortal combat, but never really kill the other off. And to what end? Still not really sure what the vendetta is about other then just speculate.
Karyl, as for John Henry thinking things through, I think he does so in a sort a cat and mouse sick game he likes to play. As for our ghostly Vane, she seems only to want vengeance.
@jsfury- I think (just my own speculation) that when he raised her from the ashes of her funeral pyre, more than her body was being burned–and he doesn’t really know or understand who Vane is now. She seems almost to be a revenant with NO human feeling left, and nothing to look forward to, so why not take him down? Dunno, just glad Erin’s in charge of the story!
I’ve been following this comic since 2011 and will see the story through until the end, but I’m sorry Erin, the maiming of the innocents is getting tiresome.
I don’t know why, but I think the unfortunate young girl is kind of an idiot, and I lack sympathy for her except by active moral reasoning. Something about throwing herself at Hunter because she’s bored sets me against her instinctively. Innocent like some horror movie victims, methinks. I feel worse for her parents, especially her father. THAT could be interesting. Hunter is moving up in my estimation in that he MAY be moving his unfortunate plaything (he’s torched others) into a position where my may help her a little.
She’s a teenage girl (or in her early twens, doesn’t really change a lot). Hormones do all sort of things to teenagers, and Hunter gave a damn at that. He’s smart enough to know that she might instinctively cling to him instead of running off, or hide behind him instead of backing away and seeing the gun pointing at her directly – she does not know whether Vane is after him or her! Hunter on the other side has seen enough casualties, and he does not even try to push her away. I blame Hunter, and Vane. Emma may have acted stupid, but unlike the other two, she’s a surprised and innocent victim of this situation – she may even be simply frozen and unable to run like most humans who face a threat to their life – , so be careful with accusing her of being at fault here.
Unfortunately, I find I must agree with PJF. The art is stunning, and the dialog engaging, but after hundreds of pages over more than half a decade we’ve still learned blessed little about the roots of the emnity between these two. Rather they seem to place themselves in a series of situations that are nearly guaranteed to cause innocent bystanders harm or death. It’s getting so typical in each chapter’s mini-arc that it almost seems to be a mutual subconcious fetish.
It’s very possible that we’re just seeing the toxic relationship of two bad people who weren’t permitted to die when they were supposed to. Innocent bystanders are getting harmed because ultimately, neither one of them really cares about anybody but themselves.
I think… that this is their fetish. For all we know they are immortal. At this point this whole feud could just be how they rev themselves up for some sort of super orgy
You know I was hoping Emma would come out of this unscathed, But She was told to leave and she was throwing herself at Hunter, Remember he did try to resist he r advances. But it seems to me that all who come in contact with these two are doomed to suffer somehow
She certainly is where Hunter is concerned, but Hunter also seems to have little problem dragging innocent parties into his periphery while he’s being tailed by a revenant hellbent on revenge. He does it at least once per chapter, and I can’t help but think he’s putting people between himself and Vane on purpose.
F5 is not working???!!! I have to wait a a week? 168 hours? 604 thousand seconds? You may have won for now, but know this: you have created an implacable reader who _will_ return!
He didn’t really think that through, did he? Then again, he didn’t exactly have time to.
Neither of those two ever do think about the bystanders.
Well I think Vane was. I feel like it was rather the point to ruin her ex-hubby’s new lover’s face

Vane’s eyes working okay? He clearly isn’t hiding behind her in any sense of the word.

Where’s the posse?
Good question.

Well to be fair they did tell her leave.

I’m going with this point of view for rest of the story

Except for the posse.
Anyone think that Vane is the antagonist?
Yes this time she seems to be but if you look back you’ll see that Hunter has acted in a villainous way too.
These two are not saints, they both deadly and desperate characters who will stop at nothing to achieve their goals.

OH MAH GAWD!!! WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOUR FAAAAAAAAAAACE?!
Sorry, had to do it.
Wow Erin, Got some good theories going here. You sure know how to stir the pot. Clever gal. 😉

great now nobody’s happy. I knew this was going to end in blood and tears I just didn’t know the order.
