Did the kickstarter and sure have my hopes up for you all! 🙂 I do love the fire/butterflies–but do I hear something ominous like the sound of steam in the background??
Here’s the thing I have about Hunter, he’s well willing to use his magic to amuse. We’ve seen do it in the past. We saw ruthlessness from him, but he also showed compassion. True, he’s a criminal, who does very bad things in pursuit of an as yet unclear goal, that is likely (although not totally certainly) selfish.
We only have seen glimpses, in flashbacks, of what drives Black to chase him, but she’s been very ruthless herself, coldly ruining the lives of bystanders, in pursuit of what is probably not (again without 100% certainty) justice, but vengeance.
Who stands in the darker shade of grey and grey morality is still unclear at this point of the story.
Left out two sentences I wanted to add at the end of my first paragraph. “But we’ve been shown that he’s not JUST that. Which is okay even if he ends up being actually the Big Bad, because no human being is made of pure evil.”
Looks like Vane has vacated the premise for the time being, instead of doing her usual ‘lets shoot him and damn what happens to the surroundings’ routine. The columns in the last panel are the ones she had been standing at in https://www.nexttownover.net/?p=2535
So, all considered, JHH doing actual magic to amuse and flirt was a thing that made her back off for now? If that is actually her being sentimental I’d be highly surprised, but time will tell…
What a beautiful page. And the uncomplicated unguarded pleasure he shows in the lowest left corner cell, at the simple joy he’s brought to this girl, is in such strong contrast to the face in the next panel, when he’s suddenly back on his guard. I love the way these two pages tip around the fulcrum of that moment.
Looking over both of these pages I’m struck by the sheer beauty of the trick. It progresses in natural (or supernatural) steps from the simple sleight of hand to the near miracle of the “witchery.” It unfolds into something huge that escapes boundaries (like the cell presentation) and then collapses again down to something small and still. Starting with the mother’s suspicions and fears and blooming out into wonder and then collapsing back down to John’s suspicion and fear. As symmetrical as the butterflies, or like the two opposing book pages I hope to see printed with these some day.
Ooo, PRETTY!!

My own theory about Hunter: He’s trying to find the tools he needs to properly resurrect his wife. Or to properly rest her.

I can’t deny it…I’d probably fall in love with Hunter…and I’m straight as an arrow ‘3’ *Blushu~*

That was so sweet(?) of Vane to let Emma get out of the way.
