Love the king of hearts. I imagine that’s JHH’s image of himself, though I’d probably tag him as the jack of spades instead. 😀
‘Twixt a harmless magic trick…’ and…? Hehe, of course he’s planning to finish that sentence in the next panel, but I like the ambiguity of the hanging clause. And that he is mixing up innocent sleight of hand with a sinister little flare of fire powers. Poor girl. Listen to your mama!
Great overall page design, and of course that magnificent foreshortened gesture pose to anchor it. I am such a sucker for caped greatcoats.
I think the answer to that sentence will be directed at Miss Black. In the form of a lot of fire, possibly… Though I can’t really recall a moment were he actively tried to kill her. Even hanging her was more of a stalling attempt I think.
I just have to say, did y’all notice that the top five panels are playing cards? Brilliant Erin, you really know how to make the whole thing move. 😉
As usual, I love the way you work something about the story into the structure of the cells. And the super zoom in the first three inset cells, and the strong perspective and interior feeling this gives to those surfaces, works particularly well with the gradual pulling back to the last unframed moment.
I just have to add a comment about that fourth inset panel: Emma’s eyes reflecting hunter’s face and hat! So amazing… the whole page is just beautiful, tinged with sinister.
“… and Dungeons and Dragons! Now -that’s- from the Devil!”

Before you finish that sentence, JHH, Vane has something she’d like to say…

You make such fabulous hands. All of your art is splendid, but your hands just rock my world!!
