Panel 4 and 5. Wow, how telling this flash back is. J.H.H. cheating in Vane right out side their bed room. He’s such a cur. Look at the pain in her face. Erin you have such amazing command of emotional expression. Question, was Vane’s hair always short? Did she ever have a “Victorian” style hair due, or was it always wild and shaggy cut?
Well, either cheating on her or stabbing the girl so he could test his resurrection spell on her… Going by context and how annoyed she seems at seeing him with this girl, cheating’s probably more likely.
Erin, I found your comic several months ago via an ad on another comic but it got shuffled, unread, to the bottom of a rather lengthy queue before I forgot about it entirely only to rediscover it Monday. I haven’t been able to put it down since and was dismayed to find that this is the latest page. I’ve read most of the comments since the start and there isn’t any praise I can give that hasn’t been given a dozen times over at least.
The only thing I regret about finding your beautiful story is that each page makes me absolutely green with envy of not just your ability with the art and layout (and don’t get me started on the attention to detail) but also your ability to weave a tale that is believable and fantastic in such equal measures that none of the magic or technology seems out of place. I’d love to be able to tell my own stories in such a masterful way.
Thank you so much for sharing this, I only wish I could give more than just words to show my appreciation.
Not buying that JHH is cheating. I think that was one of the ‘whores he could conscious killing,’ (see JHH & Vane’s dispute in the plague hotel). I’m betting he was sacrificing them in dark magic rituals in an attempt to save Vane from the Swine Fever.
Since that obviously didn’t work (at least as intended) JHH doesn’t appear to benefit from Ms. Emma’s death so she’s probably safe.
Ok, not really, but at least safe from THAT. Something else will kill her. My money is on an overzealous sheriff snowman seeking revenge.
My money is on an overzealous sheriff snowman seeking revenge. Scholar, that’s funny. I like that. And I also think you have made a more accurate assessment of what Hunter is doing. The look of pain on Vane’s face is that of the illness? Hmm, this would be an interesting turn in the story indeed.
Black doesn’t seem to be getting angry over the memory. Nostalgic and sad, if anything. So I doubt she’s remembering the time Hunter hooked up with some tart while Black was on her deathbed.
Something I noticed on rereading, the shadow of the woman Hunter is with in the flashback looks like it could belong to the bookshop owner from the short story “Genevieve”.
Love your use of emotions in this one. 🙂
Thanks much!

Always functionally short but a little less uncoiffured.
Thanks, js!
It looks like when Vane was on her deathbed ole Hunter was cheating on her..or appears to be. Maybe it just looked that way…I can’t wait to find out!
Thanks, got!
Such a great comic. I cant wait to find out what happened, and also what happens!!!
Very much obliged, Mason!

This song ran through my head while reading this page: Mumford and Sons “Lover’s Eyes”

I actually quite like Mumford & Sons. Thanks for the share, l33t!
Sorry Miss Black, but after multiple murder attempts I think you and Hunter are officially no longer dating.

Thank you for all the kind words! I’m so glad you found me and I hope you’ll stick around despite my glacial updating!
I have a terrible feeling that when the cause of the rift between Hunter and Black is finally revealed, I’m gonna end up doing a lot of ugly-crying.

Thing is, I am currently re-reading the archives.

“His victims mostly was women.”
So yeah, I think he went through a fair share of dead bodies to get that revival to work.

Looks like in the comic everyone is a bad guy for one reason or another. I love that thought actually.
