And the steampunk sorcerers are back! I haven’t heard the word placer in a long time. When I was a kid in Sacramento Calif. there where rock deserts in the area. Placer mine debris, my dad said. Don’t loose your shoes in the river because it is HELL walking a mile on burning hot gravel.
I enjoyed the interlude, and some back story for some of the “war” that is in the background of our NTO present, but I’m glad to be back to this time and this story. Beautiful light, as always – particularly on the miner’s face!
I sense you did a bunch more research to make this mine authentic – I’m looking forward to where this takes us!
And I’m still waiting for the doctor to show up… Somehow this feels a likely location – it made me think of him.
Something hits me right now. Hunter is clearly a crook, and a rather ruthless one at that. But he isn’t into doing excessive harm, most of the time. I’m willing to bet that he won’t kill this guy.
Black has shown much more ruthlessness in her hunt for Hunter. Up to cold blood mutilation of innocent bystanders.
I must commend Erin for this ambiguity. It’s “who the hell am I supposed to root for?” to an almost moorian level.
I think it’s a very grey area. It’s neither and both at the same time ’cause none of them is really good but none of them are bad either. They are no heroes nor villains, they just are Hunter and Black.
Perhaps we shall root for the people around them? And the horses? Poor sods keep on dying.
That snow looks so cozy and hunter is buying an old mine. Interesting, what is our dashing desperado up to I wonder…

“With my keen eye for geology, I’ve realized that this crappy gold mine is actually a damned good platinum mine!
