Ummm… The emblem shown turning over in the first bit is supposed to be the one above the brazier right? But the next panel shows the bottom of the flower design, not the upside down skull thing…
Actually, I think that it shows the skull thing, the flower is on the downside of the medallion. I missed that before. It’s pretty cool! Now, did Hunter expect this or was he just making a while guess…. as always,Erin-spectacular art!
“Did Hunter expect this” I think so, this seems like he is part of secret society of elemental mages and he is going to their secret meeting place/lab.
Skull with horns tends to represent demon power. Top left candle likely represents his fire magic. I will guess below that represents air, bottom right is water, and top right is earth.
Bell, book, and candle– Anathema! Wizardry! And is that a mutant goat skull? The other two symbols are a cup and a… wrench? By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes. Down those stairs: freaky, evil magic, guaranteed!
I actually just shared what the smaller symbols are — candle, book and bell are right on (of course!), as is cup; the last is wand — along with their significance as a worldbuilding extra for Patrons. Out of gratitude & respect for them I won’t share their significance here, but I’ll say they don’t represent the elements … and they’re not particularly important to the NTO plot one way or another.

Actually, I think I agree with Trisscar, it definitely looks like the bottom of the flower design. Maybe it spun another 180 degrees?

Book probably represents the magic book, knowledge, library of spells that can be acquired here by each elemental mage.
Putting fire in the holder was probably way to say “I am a mage so I have permission to pass”.
Skull with horns/demon like may represent that they pay some sort of price for this power.
More about the subsymbols on the device below. Meanwhile, thanks Karyl!
WILD not while—sheesh, when does my coffee kick in???!
somebody knows a secret!

the wind mage (or whatever) has that skull symbol on his ring. You can see it a few pages back while he shakes JHH’s hand.
