Now I understand the distinct way Vane held her hand in that previous flashback… the two smaller fingers partially folded down. I recognized it as hers in this page instantly. I think no other way of recognizing her would have given me the same shiver. Brilliant.
And I like the way Hunter’s hand in the last cell is out in front of the frame, allowing us, with so little detail, to know Vane is walking right past him (and his smirk).
Like jsfury, I wonder when this flashback is in their past. First meeting? Or is it her spoiling his act later in their relationship? Earlier in NTO there is the encounter in the street (with flashback, where she seems surprised that he is singling her out). That flashback might be after she spoiled his act… (that would mean a different kind of surprise was on her face than I originally thought) or it might be before… Cool.
And, as usual, I wonder if I would ponder all these things this closely if we weren’t getting these one page at a time.
Thanks for another wonderful page. I love the way the flashback is what covers up all but the glimpse of Vane’s hand… beautiful and effective way to present both. And I love the way you drew her glove – dead black with strong high lights.
The flashback makes me wonder if there was a time when JHH was a more normal/natural magician… And if this memory is of an event that made him seek a more dangerous path…
Departing detail… I love John Henry’s face in that critical cell with the gloved hand. The flashback is plainly unfolding in his mind – and what else? It’s such a still face. Love it.
😀
I just noticed the snazzy flame pattern on his waistcoast, it’s great how many little details there are in this comic.
Huh. Interesting. I wasn’t expecting that flashback. But I wonder if this was part of their first meeting or at some point of their relationship?

There’s something… perhaps it’s the square jaw and the manicured beard, that reminds me of the villain from Titan A.E… now what was he…
Korso… Captain Joseph Korso. Haven’t got any clips of him… *google, google*
Hmm… okay, not an exact match, but there’s still a resemblance…
Eli…
