Gees Erin, lots of innuendo flying about in this exchange. Eye contact is telling. Guy with the large brim bowler hat and glasses has the “You’re it” syndrome written all over him. I just recently figured out who John Henry is sort of modeled after, trouble is I have no place to post a picture of the person. “This is all going to end in tiers, I just know it.” (THGTTG) Glad you had a good time at the convention, but sorry to hear your sick. My dear, you must take better care of yourself. π
Sorry, sorry, misread your reply. Guess I was tired from all the damn snow shoveling I’ve been doing here. Okay, I just spent three hours trying to find the picture of the actor that I think best portraits JHH. Unfortunately I couldn’t. I did however find a link that should open to the page where there’s lots of promo pictures of said actor. At the bottom of the page that opens you’ll see a good picture that I think looks like the living embodiment of John Henry Hunter. Tell me if you think so Erin. Again, sorry I misunderstood your reply.
OMG Erin if you took any more time I for one would just melt down looking at it! From the details of all the lettering, the looks exchanged between Vane and Hunter–it’s almost too much! JUST WONDERFUL!!
Ha, it’s funny how whenever you post a page that you feel could have used more of your time, it still blows out of the water anything else you can find on the net.
I wonder how and when this is all going down. Poor bystanders.
I imagine he’s referring to Shanna Cochran from the webcomic Faans!. Good comic, huge archive, heh. And yeah, she does look rather like her, in facial structure at least.
The top of this page looks like Hunter has hi-jacked the comic just as he’s taken over that stage and captured the audience. And then it all comes into focus around just those two – like there is no one else in the room…
The crowd scene, with everyone pulled back a bit and looking incredulously at Vane also feels like a well directed moment in a movie. You zoom in and out so effectively.
I feel like the simple blue background at the top puts all the emphasis on the words and on JHH – focused as the crowd would be. Then Vane’s words pop everyone back into the room – into reality (the room reappears in the background) except John Henry has another reality superimposed (his memory). But he doesn’t miss more than a beat and he’s back in the groove… That’s a lot of story and focal movement to accomplish in just a few cells. You are amazingly good at that.
I love the gold filigree around this page. And the way John Henry can be represented so thoroughly by just his legs and his billowing coat – that’s wonderful, too. As are the shadows and lights on his pants – beautifully done – I sense the strong bones and muscles under the fabric. If you’ve spent time in life drawing classes, I would love the see some of the results – you are such a keen observer.
And I echo everything Random Spanish Guy says above. Hope you are better soon.
Geeze, I pulled a muscle in my side laughing at your comment.
And I think they are or were married in New Orleans in the backstory? But I might be wrong from what I am infering from what our gravious talespinner has spun in the flashbacks.
How rude, to keep interrupting him like that. She’s interested enough in the dowser to not shoot him on sight, though, so… that probably counts as manners when mizz Black is concerned.
The black text with yellow outlines is a bit hard to read on a yellowish background of the dowser, but hey, only so much you can do with a wall of text, eh. With the rest you did a splendid job, boss lady, first Hunter doing a show, then sudden “oh, I didn’t expect you here” memory of Vane and then the building tension in the last four panels. The blue background actually helps to achieve that, since there’s nothing else to be distracted by and so we have to focus on those two.
Sorry Annie. Like I said in my [belated] response to you here, there was an issue with the WP plugin that handles the assignment of the NTO avatars for folks without Gravatars. While itβs back now, the cache was wiped and no one unfortunately has whatever they used to in 99% of cases. If any regulars were super attached I can probably manually give you your old one or something like it back, though.
I agree that Hunter bears some potential resemblance to Vincent Price–who supposedly is a distant ancestor of mine! Anyway, a fine character actor, particularly for complicated villains. π
Karyl, I hope Erin see the resemblance too. When I saw the picture of Mr. Price in an off screen candid wearing a white, wide brim gamblers hat I couldn’t believe it. I really saw John Henry in human form. And what better person to portray JHH then this man. Alas he’s been gone now for several years. Rest in Peace Vincent…er is that pieces? xD WELL, HE WAS THE MASTER OF THE MACABRE YA KNOW. π
Cursory image search didn’t turn up the gambler’s hat photo you mentioned but I ended up looking at quite a few pictures once I got going. He really smolders (harr) in this one.
That’s quite a sassy look on the eyed Vanes face π brilliant contrast to the hate of her modern day counterpart burning a hole through Hunter. This was the best looking webcomic I’d ever seen when I started on page one, and its just gotten better with every page. The fact you make every town/chapter have its own feel and look is probably one of my favourite things about this series. I also love that you are making them are available on the Comixology app for a very modest sum.
You know, the thing about Vane is that she’s just tirelessly brave. Every time Hunter wrecks her shit, she just fixes it and goes after him again. And now we’re seeing a new kind of bravery. Here she is, a bit messy and not the best dressed, confronting an immaculate, “heroic” Hunter about his pseudo-science mumbo-jumbo in front of a huge crowd. Vane’s like the honey badger, she don’t care.
Mr Black, it may not be a good idea to talk about flying bullets…
Well, he has previously performed a bullet catch with his spleen.
This hit me just right for some reason π
It apparently didn’t do the same to him.

He wasn’t really modeled after anyone in particular but I’d love to see/hear who you have in mind. Thanks as always!
Is there some place where I embed a picture here Erin?
No, but you can link one.
Okay that would be good. Just let me know when it’s up. π
Er, huh?

Obliged as always, RSG. π
They are talking o.o
That is very fortunate for this mass of squishy bystanders of questionable innocence!
And I really like their banter.
Ha. Thanks Jef!
Hey, she looks like that lady from Faans.
I … don’t actually know who that is.
I imagine he’s referring to Shanna Cochran from the webcomic Faans!. Good comic, huge archive, heh. And yeah, she does look rather like her, in facial structure at least.

I felt like I went too far but simultaneously not far enough with the type handling at the top of the page — thanks so much Arnly.
“Make love, not war.”
“Do both, get married.”
Why do I feel these two will be rolling in the hay shortly, then firing at each other over a burning barn a little bit later.
Geeze, I pulled a muscle in my side laughing at your comment.
And I think they are or were married in New Orleans in the backstory? But I might be wrong from what I am infering from what our gravious talespinner has spun in the flashbacks.
And their byplay here is strong again, indeed.
I really, really need to start from 1 and reread it again. (Never a bad thing!)

I love the text effects in the first panel. They are quite awesome!
Why did this thing change me from Eli to the bodyguard dude?

Also, thanks very much!
No worries, bosslady! Just curious about the techno-wizardry that is above my paygrade. It’s not like I even vaguely resemble either gentleman ;P

Oh I totally see the resemblance. Also someone else mentioned this before so it’s not just us, either (I had to do a search; it was in the comments here, way at the bottom B0mar brings up VP as a dead ringer for JHH).
Cursory image search didn’t turn up the gambler’s hat photo you mentioned but I ended up looking at quite a few pictures once I got going. He really smolders (harr) in this one.
10-4 Erin. π
Erin, please please please please please make the Vote banner a bit bigger?
It’s so tiny it’s pretty missable and some of us have bad eyes. It’s criminal that your wonderful comic misses any votes!
So it sucks the life out of people eh? Zombie machine !

Sorry should’ve been Sassy look on the BLUE-eyed Vane”
Love the chemistry between these two.
And that inset panel, my god those eyes.

A little jab at a certain someone’s steel-nerved inaccuracies, eh?
