Oh my–stretching? and just what will this artifact do that the cabinet did not do?I am fascinated and repelled by Hunter’s machinations…. you just know he’s up to no good!
Ms Dauterive is going to have trouble getting the gemstones in that necklace back for sure. It’s going to be interesting to see what the machine is dowsing for.
Well I hope what ever is ailing Miss Erin and the family will soon be gone and you have a great time at Comic Con Madison. Wish I could go but alas, so very far away.
HEY! I just figured out what’s going on at this big gathering where John Henry is displaying his dowser thingy. I couldn’t quite understand all the back ground and glass and all, but upon enlargement of this page panel four reviles a steam engine on display in the back ground.
This is some kind of trade and invention FAIR. And it’s inside this gigantic crystal palace. Erin, WOW! How can you say; “I didn’t do nearly as much with the page as I would have liked”?
Are you kidding? It’s all so Steam Punk and cool. And that flag hanging from the ceiling. Very reminiscent of an American flag. Lots of odd parallels in this place called Next Town Over.
And How about that magic box device JHH has on stag in his flash back? Notice the goats head at the top with the tongue hanging out. Another sign of the devil?
I think your clues are very stimulating and oh the details. Get well and have a great time at the convention. Will you be displaying your wonderful creations there?
I’ve been pining for another flashback, and here it is… Is it Vane’s mind that is recalling this? John Henry’s? Is it just for us? I like that we can’t be sure.
I love the crowd scenes – the faces – the crystal palace light on every hat – such attention to the detailed demands of the light and shadow in this unique space. I think you nailed that, as usual.
The perspectives in these pages are crazy and convincing. The shot from above has great foreshortening and I love the dramatic swirl of JHH’s coat – better seen from above. The complex viewpoint and interior space in the fourth cell look like they were very challenging – a LOT of telling details make up all the corners, intersections, and surfaces – and I think you nailed that, too. If you did this out of your head I am amazed. And even if you had some photo or real place you used as a model, adapting that to this scene and this story is seamlessly done.
I’ve been thinking about the story all week, wondering if the professor and John Henry are in the same organization, and the plan all along was to get him on stage with this device. I wonder if Vane has been trying to prevent him from getting to this point, rather than trying to kill him per se. Or maybe her feud with him is personal and just in the way of business… whatever business he has. Somehow I feel like he is not working alone on this.
Bandits? Of course no one else lived to tell that it was Vane alone.
I half expect to see the Doctor in this crowd… last we saw he grabbed his rifle and we know no more…

Yes indeed Arnly, I think we can all agree that is what makes this web comic so damn entertaining. We really don’t know what Erin has in store for us, but oh what fun we have hypothesizing. Yes? 😉
jsfury, I completely agree. It’s the twists and turns and the way so many things seem likely, but then we get something unexpected yet quite believable (almost inevitable), instead. Like a great movie – which I think this graphic story resembles, from Erin’s attention to light, camera angles and compositions, to her sense of timing and suspense.
I hope you are entirely well and have a great time and success at Comic Con! NTO is up there with Girl Genius, Delilah Dirk, Gunnerkrigg, Power Nap… Knock ’em out! Make new friends! Feel renewed and confirmed in the fun and challenge of your art form.

Hunter is definitely a showman.
Thanks for the update!
I’m still not sure if Hunter is the hero or the villain…
Hunter activates this thing and achieves the pinnacle of stage magician craft: Pulling a rabbit out of everyone else’s hat!
This got me to laugh. Hard.
I do what I can.
A mouth purtier than a two dollar…
What a master showman, Hunter knows how to work a crowd!! I wonder tho, is that Vane in the box?
