Looks like someone failed ninja school.

Also, did Hunter just skimp out on paying?

But he doesn’t have the exact change and the tailoress is a bit too dead to operate the cash register…

All right, I have to say it:

Seems that, once again Hunter is quite the…

    …lady-killer.

    BA DUM TISH.

Ok, so I don’t get how he did her in–was it the pins or did he break her neck? Sorry, just not seeing it.

It was the pins. Upper right panel.

I don’t get it either. It seems like the kiss was so intense that she swooned. She was holding the poison pin in her left hand, which he controlled via his grip on her left wrist. One panel seems to show him forcing her hand toward her own abdomen, but it’s not clear what’s going on there.

Damn. jsfury called it in the previous update, but I didn’t want to believe it. Damn, that’s cold blooded. I guess we needed a reminder on how much of a monster Hunter is. Poor Eliza. 🙁

Thanks for noticing Random, I didn’t want to believe it either, but I had my suspicions. Especially when I saw the startled look on Eliza face. Erin does such an amazing job of capturing expressions (and everything else) that I felt the bite of death in her eyes. Yes, poor Eliza.

    Stone. Cold.

Hunter must have heard everything, so he knew Eliza didn’t *want* to kill him, she was being actively coerced into doing so. And when he kissed her, she was totally neutralized. He could have made her drop the pins, then left her alone. But he killed her– because he wanted that fancy-ass coat.

Why leave “Mizz D” alive though? Because he actually needs a date to the ball?!

Because he doesn’t plan to leave her alive for long, or he has a more “poetic” plan for hurting and/or killing her.

A merciful kill I suppose. He knew she was coerced, but still she agreed to the hit. So he kills her civilly as possible, giving her a kiss and embrace as a fade out sensation.

The fact he treats the cadaver respectfully shows something too. He didn’t give a second look to Veronique’s deceased cousins and seemed to leave the ladies of the evening to their own devices back at the Crossing.

I think he expected Veronique to kill Eliza or continue to use her, so tied up that loose end with some regret; but certainty. And this is a final warning to Veronique that he does not spare on account of gender. He killed her kin, so her vengeance attempt was somewhat justified, but the catspaw approach was not acceptable. So next time she burns I think.

So he takes a ‘You come at me with a loaded gun, or you don’t come at me at all’ approach to vengeance?

      I can back that.

Oooooo! So pretty! Just caught up after the holiday craziness. This just kicked my year up several awesome levels!
Is he walking out of there with a pin still in the shoulder of his coat?

These last two pages are lovely, and shocking. And it seems the most likely course, now that it’s happened. People who cross him die. Now that I think of it, V. Dauterive is an odd exception – but he took something from her instead. But this time???

As usual with your scenes, you make me hear the sounds. In this case it’s the sound of her dress as she collapses. And the collapse is so complete – beautifully captured in that foreshortened view in the first cell on this page. Then the gentle way he catches and carries her to the chair – deadly gallantry. And I can’t detect any regret.

I can’t wait to hear Ms. Dauterive’s reaction/reply. Will she answer him, or just bolt? She has a lot of nerve, but she hadn’t planned on confronting him, and she’s had a horrible surprise. If she does run, will he let her go? She’s more guilty and dangerous than Eliza…

Great story telling, as always – surprising and natural all at once.

I hope you had a great holiday!

I suddenly noticed that the gripping plot development made me forget myself, and I posted twice without pointing out that your art keeps getting more and more beautiful. So there you go. I particularly like the effect of Hunter standing against the sunlight.

I wonder if he knew where the bones in her corset were, or if he had to feel around a bit in order to find a spot to use the pin? Or maybe corsets don’t exist in this world and women are naturally graced with those figures!
