I love it! Those last two panels bring it together so well. They make it feel so. . . real. There must be so many other sounds going on, one more isn’t abnormal. And the quizzical stance of the blue guy with the lax shoulders, tilted head, and casual stance gave me a laugh. very awesome poses, but that one is amazing.
Actually from what i can gather he is a soldier (old west) and thinks the sound is unusual and is going to investigate it with weapon drawn (reaching for his holster i think is the last panel).
There’s a reason he’s on that train in full uniform and armed. That’s probably the reason that hunter has just boarded.
I can see ‘you lot’ never seriously played with trains or watched too many Westerns set on a train. The guy in the blue cap and frock coat is the ‘Conductor’ aka the ticket seller/collector – he checks that folks getting on have a valid ticket or sells them one if there is not a Railway Agency in the town where they get on. Carries a change machine and a ticket punch under his coat.
Erin, you must get a real kick out of the speculation your readers type up, but honestly only you know what the hell is going on as you are the creator of this beautiful graphic novel. What I find intriguing is the scenery whizzing by John Henry and the windows of the train as it moves along. Woman, your perception is so acute. You nailed it. Surprising though that Hunter’s grapple hook wound is still hurting.
I really love the movement in the top panel. I think the backgrounds of the trees and mountains moving by are a little confusing though. if I was going to guess I’d reflections on water. too much blue?
Thanks. And you may be right in that the read is watery and a little off; I just used the colors I’d been using in preceding pages for rocks/shadow but with the blur it’s sort of ambiguous.
It’s perfectly clear when read page-after-page. particularly with the bottom two panes, which have the autumn colors to remind one that not everything red is fireman’s fire.
I usually post a comment when I catch up or shortly thereafter… and I gotta say the past hour has been quite the one for leisure, suspense (gotta love the suspense), and just generally a good read. I’ve been reading lots of webcomics lately and this one sits just shy of the best one of ’em all. Out of about 40 comics, in fact. You have a beautiful mind, please keep letting it express it’s wonders.
Yup – I thought that was how JHH would catch this train. I love the way the motion is shown in frame 3. And (your usual keep observation of humanity) the way nobody notices the noise except the professional in uniform… So much noise on a train that passengers would likely think nothing of the “Whump” on the roof.
And you’ve just gotta love all the drama from that sensational jacket. I would love to know how much sketching and development goes into his wardrobe, or if that’s more of a research project, shopping old photos and other sources for things John Henry would naturally choose and then tailoring them to his frame and particular tastes.
Red hair? He gonna die.

I kind of feel like Tophat Dude should be drinking coffee…
Haha!
I see the harpoon wound is still painful. There seems to be a limit to Hunter’s healing ability.

Looks alot like an Union army uniform from the civil war era to me, that brown thing that he seems to be grabbing looks like the butt of a revolver.
While of course there’s no Union army in NTO you’re right; his hand’s wandering to the grip of his sidearm. He is not a conductor.

A lot on Hunter is still hurting.

Lovely colors.
Who is that hiding behind the hat in the foreground? Probably no one, but it’s interesting that I can’t see their face.
Alright, there’s only one way to settle this:
Erin, is the blue fellow a conductor or a soldier?
He’s neither. He’s a privately employed railroad guard.
I figured that man in the blue uniform was a railroad guard. My great grand fater was one and he had suit similar to that.

Thank you very kindly!

I am way late to the comment party, but I must say, Hunter just did a Yoshi jump right there and nobody noticed?
Love this comic btw!
It’s nice to be able to catch a train without worrying about leaving your horse behind…
