Buuut, that blood splatter, he fell, and.. and.. and.. D: I just don’t get the how, bullet catch is one trick, but we saw blood, she saw blood and his jacket seems pretty clean :O And I’m quite amazed because the level of Epic is over 9000 😀
Well I knew John Henry wasn’t really dead, yet. But I am puzzled as to how he got back onto the pay roll car so quick with nair a sign of a body wound. ??? And why the flash back of JHH almost floating off the page in the upper right corner?
Another clue to the shadowy past that set this endless revenge quest to motion? It looks as it Hunter is some kind of magician on a stage as Vane is recalling a moment.
Oh Erin, you do like keeping this suspense going, don’t you? And what of the posse back in town? Is Flint, Lee, and all the rest now thundering down the pass on their horses with their Henry’s ready to settle the score?
Tune in next week for another installment as we “Ride the Trail of Vengeance in NEXT TOWN OVER.” Really love this comic. ;D
Well, on second read through, I realized it was her grappling hook he’s holding… don’t know about the blood or wound, but maybe he swiped it and that’s what he used to get back on the train?
that glowing silhouette of Hunter is beyond epic. His facial expressions here are incredibly spot-on. Also, I’ve never noticed this before, but the blotchy effect in the comic is actually pretty cool–the way you can see it in the margins and faintly in the actual panels.
Uhm… Could someone please, please explain to me what the “Paff” in the last page was about and why it seems connected to a blue sword-thingy that Hunter is holding (when do swords ever go “paff”?), and why he’s even holding it?
I’m guessing it’s connected to something he did inside the carriage? And why would he presume that Vane’s got what she was looking for? And what is Hunter looking for in the train? And why is this train carrying the mysterious, heavily guarded machine at all? And what IS that machine? *head explodes*
Lleyn, “PAFF” is the sound effect of the white hot sword JHH conjured up to sever the connection of the pay roll car from the tender car. Note glowing red hot coupler just below and in front of John Henry. So you guessed that right.
As for the presumption of Vane getting what she wanted. I’m not sure of that one. I think a lot of heads are exploding. looking forward to next installment.
Oooohhh… *light bulb goes on* Thanks for that enlightenment, jsfury! I did not see that detail and that, of course, explains a lot. A LOT. As to the rest… Let’s just hope we all keep our sanity long enough to be able to enjoy the next page 😉
Ive been a fan of your comic for more than a year now. And seeing you persue your story online like this has REEEEEALLY inspired me..so much so that Iv started my own. Il be launching it tomorrow and would reallt appriciate it if you checked it all out.
With the action slowed again, the emphasis is back on facial expressions, dialogue, and the chemistry between these two… I love the changing speed settings on the drama. The reach for the grappling hook, and JHH’s anticipation (and lift already performed) seem to deal him all the cards.
I love John’s expression in the last panel – like a tomcat sauntering proudly from the room only to be grabbed by the scruff of his neck.
And the flashback triggered by the courtly bow sets the tone for this scene under the dark smoke from the engine.
Somehow it’s poetic justice, too, that Vane’s trick with the car separation is played again, this time on her, and much the way John planned to do it all those pages ago.
And while the two of them have their moments alone, there is all the suspense jsfury mentions above… the trestle, the doctor in pursuit, the posse, and the machine. What’s next? This comic is one of the highlights of my week.

I’d just chalk it up to hoo doo and not think about it too hard.
Woow, actually used his name. Are we going to have a bittersweet feels moment?
Hunter, it’s a trick! she’s got your number, and it’s not a good one.
Ha! I knew it was Hunter! and did she just call him by name? Hmmmm. Also his reaction. This could get interesting!
“WHAT DOES IT DO?!”
I absolutely love the blurry effect on the scenery in the last picture, to show the speed of the train.
Okay, I admit it.
I have no idea what’s gonna happen next.
But I’m dyin’ to find out!
Great update.
