I just love the artwork of this comic, and the story has me asking so many questions already and looking forward to all of the answers. Simply beautiful, I love it.
I am eager to see how Mr. Hunter interacts with a good Samaritan. He needs many things; clothes, food, weapons. Will he deal fairly with the good doctor and townsfolk? Or will he follow the law of the jungle?
Knowing Hunter some nice new threadswill be a high priority.
But weapons? Has he ever used any weapon besides his tobacco that didn’t come from his magic?
I doubt he will be overtly hostile. He seems to prefer legitimate transacations, at least mutually agreed ones. He bought his last outfit fair and square and only started burning stuff down when threatened. Even then he spared the two assailants lives and just left.
Very true. Hunter seems able, if not willing to be peaceable. I’d be more worried about what Vane Black would do if she knew the Doctor helped John Henry Hunter.
He’s also seriously injured. Just barely bandaged wounds that can open up in a plague ridden town? Even with his might and all his magical power, it’s in his best interests at this moment to be civil. His personality just makes it easier to be civil and friendly when the time comes.
Sometimes fighting is the worst thing you can do when peaceful measures can get past obstacles that crop up safer.
I can nearly hear the rain on the roof, and the occasional hiss from the fire as it manages to blow down the chimney–it’s otherwise rather quiet and calm, it seems to me. Hope Hunter doesn’t have to run again right away!
Aww, Hunter clutches his pocket watch while he’s being bandaged! It’s like a teddy bear. A teddy bear filled with bitter memories.
ARGHhhh there’s no shot of Hunter’s back here. Deliberate teasing! I thought for sure we’d get to see the scar or tattoo or whatever. Mr. not-quite-a-doctor needs to say, “No, I mean what the Hell happened to your BACK?!” And then BOOM, backstory! (Hah, pun.) No lies this time JHH. C’mon!
Also, does that bottle say “Straight Whiskey?” As always it’s the details that make this story shine.
Erin, I love that your art tells just as much (more!) of the story than your dialog – it sets you apart, and makes NTO my favorite read. I have to force my self to s l o w d o w n when I read your latest update and take the time to see all the detail you put into everything. The rain in panel 1 of this page is especially amazing – I can’t wait to see it falling on Vane!
I second Sulucamas – that was indeed a good catch by My_Little_Annie on the pocketwatch, which I had missed. This is why I always read the comments to see what sharper eyed folks have caught. In that vein, I thought maybe I spotted the pocketwatch back on page 2, frame 6… but it doesn’t look like Hunter that it’s being given to. I always hesitate to ask questions, because I enjoy the little clues that are dropped towards the overarching story – which clearly has much yet to be revealed, in good time. Much as I liked Genevieve, and much as I loved trying to figure out if she is canon to the Hunter/Vane saga, I’m very glad you’re back to NTO – and your artwork is better than ever. I hope your enjoying the new addition to the family, and know that your supporters are willing to wait as long as it takes for the quality of storytelling you provide.
So, yeah, read the archives in one entire sitting after following a link from the archives of another comic that I’d ALSO been reading fanatically to get caught up on.
Your art is gorgeous and compelling; your plot intriguing and enticing; your dialogue is captivating; your world-creation skills are top-notch.
I love the set up for this area. Each down has its own unique feel to it, and I just love it!
Means a lot to me, Ravyn! Thank you kindly.

Much obliged!
You do a excellent job on your environments and subjects. You have brought the West alive in ways others can only dream.
Whoa! High praise indeed. Thanks so much.

to me hunter (despite being very wicked) seems less likely to bite the hand that feeds him or cause a ruckus
hunter isn’t necessarily inhuman. While he certainly isn’t the nicest of fellows, he tends to be genteel when he can afford it.

Good grief, what a catch with the pocket watch! 😀
It’d be an interesting change of pace of Vane doesn’t set eyes on Hunter for this entire chapter…
More! More! Give me more!
Your artwork is incredible and the story is gripping.
Wow. Thanks so much!
