I have thought he was a decent man since nearly the beginning, I just had no proof. I think he’s just made a lot of bad mistakes and now he’s bound by them. And also tainted by them. Obviously he is not COMPLETELY good, but at the same time he is not completely bad either.
I’ve long suspected that Hunter ain’t the bad guy here. Most of his direct use of his magic is to defend himself. He doesn’t really start trouble. For that matter, for all his power, why hasn’t he simply taken whatever he’s needed or wanted? He gambled for jewelry, paid for clothing, and always ends up fleeing and running rather than just burning everything to the ground. Maybe he ain’t a hero, but he’s not necessarily a villain.
Actually, I think this is a world of Gray and Grey/Black morality. There is no actual heroes, only degrees of bastardness. The only innocent victims are the poor horses 🙁 By the way, is there a “magic system” in this world which explains Hunter´s firebending? For what we have read at this point (included the side story), the only source of supernatural power seems to be the Devil´s Deal.
If this was like Deadlands, I’d blame Hunter’s powers on the Hoyle Book of Games. In fact, this could still be a valid option. In Deadlands, the Hoyle Book of Games 1st edition print contains magic spells in relation to games played. Hunter is a gambler after all and carries himself so. And the spells are not restricted by alignment.
As for this world, it is distinctly gray and grey morality. If that flashback we saw of her being rez’ed by fire because of Hunter, then she indeed does have a proper beef with him. Though as Messenger has mentioned, he is keeping the spells limited to his targets and not innocents who just happen to be there. Unless you count the businesses he ruined as affecting innocents. (The owners haven’t hurt him and when you kill a major business you do affect the townsfolk’s economy.) There’s a reason he has a sizeable bounty on his head.
I’d presume so since he did try gambling for that necklace before he was rudely interrupted. And he seemed comfortable doing it when he could take it by force. He also had a Riverboat Gambler feel with his suit at the beginning.
It’s your story though, I’m just enjoying it, so it’s up to you.
Regarding the Deadlands setting, hucksters´proffesion can differ from mere “gamblers” leaving aside their little games with Manitous. Is perfectly possible to be a Marshall and a Huckster (as long as the public don´t catch you spellcasting) But you already stated that game wasn´t between your inspiration sources. Still I wonder if the supernatural forces who granted Hunter his powers don´t care about drawing too much attention from muggles.
As I said, he may not be a hero, but he ain’t a villain either. Even as this is a world of Gray and Grey/Black Morality, he’s still not in the darkest hue of that spectrum based on what he’s done and is willing to do.
Just realized: Hiding in a quarantined town and recovering from his injuries there may be a real smart move (assuming he doesn’t catch what they have). I wonder if Ms. Black is going to consider entering the town.
Well, if the dog likes him and he likes the dog, he can’t be as bad as I thought he was. Dogs can be a great indicator of a person’s character!
the dog smells horse barbarcue on him.. most dogs would lick and kiss anyone for a nice hunk of cooked meat…
Oh man, dark days… Just what happened way back then? 😮
It’s a little late to be warnin’ a man about quarantine once he’s *in* the camp. How about some nice signs next time, buddy?
And I agree with the Guest. If the dog likes him, then he can’t be all bad.
I think the rock with QUARANTINE painted in red on the previous page was supposed to be the warning.
Yep. I saw that and corrected myself a minute after this post. Thanks.
And dang. Just went back to last week again and saw the sign.
My apologies, mister. You tried your best.

Much is revealed, and much is contained in these panels–he’s not surprised about the quarantine, but I bet the local will be surprised by Hunter!

Also, he wears a white hat (and clothing).

Is Hunter a gambler?

Indeed; folks looking for this to conform to the rules of the Deadlands setting are undoubtedly in for disappointment.
Either way, it is a great story and I thank you for presenting it to us.

Well… he did *brand* a lady. That’s not proper behavior for a gentleman.
Solf J. Kimblee of FMAB. Although, he was actually evil.

Considering she is an undead, not to mention her determination (or obsession if your prefer) about putting Hunter six feet under… yes, yes she would.
Interesting. Maybe there’s more to Hunter then we realize… if a this dog likes him. Maybe he’s not such a bad guy? XD
To everyone who thinks one dog cuddle means he’s a good guy, I would like to remind you that Hitler loved dogs and was very affectionate towards them.
Oh man, even with the clearly feverish flush to his eyes and nose, JHH is one hot dude. Those burning blue eyes! Get well soon <3
look on his face when the dog start’s licking him is priceless
