Huh, so she really killed them? You know, for a cold unfeeling undead wraith with psychopathic tendencies and hellfire behind her eyes sworn to the single-minded mission of destroying one man and anything standing between them, she’s surprisingly distant. I guess she just needed to blow off some steam.
While Ms. Black seems to be the villain at the moment, consider this:
Hunter has obviously been well enough to leave for some time at this point, and is intelligent enough to know Vane was still on his trail and would track him down. Yet he stayed and knowingly put the doctor and patients in danger. Is this JHH knowing the young man was doomed to a slow agonizing death and arranging for Black to do the killing so he didn’t have dirty his hands? Is it part of a larger spell that requires ritual murder in which he wanted Vane to be an inadvertent participant? Is he testing her humanity? Or is this just his way to spark some family counseling?
Whatever it is he seems more annoyed than surprised or angry.
True, but he wasn’t the one who pulled the trigger. Miss Black did.
Even if he knew she was… hellbent… on going after him, as far as he knew only he was the direct target of her wrath and violence. What reason would Miss Black have to kill innocents at all?
And given Hunter’s pleading two updates ago, he has feelings for her and even had high hopes for her character. It’s not he who failed and brought death to this plagued town, but Miss Black. She went and shot a child after he begged her to help them. Even we, the audience, were quite shocked.
And I also disagree on him being just “annoyed”. That’s definitely a “You’ve gone too far” kind of angry expression.
You have to remember than Miss Black appears to also have been the creator of such a plague. She’s probably intimately familiar with how the disease ends. Probably personally suffered it and was brought back by Hunter.
And she’s got just a bit of a cold-heart. So putting the kid out of his misery was probably a mercy in her eyes. And the dog…well….it did come at her with fangs bared.
Then all the more reason for her to consider what Hunter said. Being brought back from the grave is a second chance. She could have still tried to find a cure or at least alleviate the plague victims’ suffering.
And as far as what she did was a mercy killing, then she could have at least done better. She just offed both the kid and the dog like that. Maybe the dog deserved it, but not the boy. If the kid’s only way out is in death, she could have at least given the child some dignity.
She didn’t. She shot him just to make a point to Hunter.
Like I said, she’s kind of cold-hearted. I don’t really know enough about it, but it seems to me that coming back from the dead – or near dead, or whatever state she’s in – might do something to your mental state. Could very well be that she views herself purely as an agent of death and/or vengeance.
I know. This is the first time I can really appreciate how awesome hunter is. Before he was impressive and intimidating, but always the apparent villain from the story point of view.
“Angel eyes.” Hmm, isn’t that Lee’s line? (GBU) Because honestly, there is no angel in Vanes’ eyes at the moment. Like the steam theory to cover Hunter’s escape. The jester he makes, perhaps summoning the steam towards them?
I like the limited palette you are using in this chapter. Reminiscent of the flashbacks – so the deeper connections between this chapter and their joint past seem like a shorter reach for both of them (and for us).
And it really makes the blue of his eyes leap off the page at us.
He doesn’t like her when she’s plying her trade. I wonder if she’s cauterizing the wound of a truly horrid infection he’s spreading, all Typhoid Mary like. “Mercy killing” as she sees it? I also wonder why she didn’t just kill John Henry Hunter instead of the poor boy. She’s certainly shown little compunction about perforating him before.
Thrilling! An awesome chapter.
Why is it marked page 18 anyway? Shouldn’t it be 19?
Yes, it should (whoops!)! And now it is.
Well, that was unexpected.

although maybe he was planning on leaving after the doc came back?
he was supposed to be keeping them occupied

All I know is I’m gonna keep reading.
I’m sorry–I don’t get what just happened..something outside blew up and then imploded into the door, but what’s the gesture he’s making?
I do believe he used his pyromantic flair to flash boil the outside water into steam to cover an escape.
Loved the ‘I’m just an entertainer’ line. So badass!

Angel Eyes was Lee’s character, although he did refer to Eastwood as Tuco’s guardian angel in one of the earlier scenes.
As for the steam, is he boiling the water in the puddle outside the door or is he creating a heat flash in the air and drawing it in?
Angel Eyes… Hunter should speak for himself hah!
I wonder if he can create enough steam to make a larger fog to escape in?
Yikes, that shrapnel from the shattered window…! D:
Wonder if Hunter’s still weak, and this is the best he can manage for now.
I’m sorry but I can take sides in the conflict. I can see this is one hell of a story!
No animal is safe in this comic.
Wow, that actually was really clever.

I just caught up today, and I love the art and the story! I want to know more about the historical background!
You’re really talented, this series is far better than many published comics.
