In Hunter’s defense, he was just trying to relax and have a bath when they pulled guns on him. If they’d just stuck to their job and not tried to play big time bounty hunters, he probably would have been happy to leave them in peace. Don’t play with fire if you can’t handle getting burned…
A lot also depends on what he set on fire. Did he mean to only set the room on fire and walk away and the girls got injured in the confusion that followed or did he actively set THEM on fire with his powers and the room caught alight as a side effect?
Also, do those burns -which look second degree, btw, rather than full thickness burns and, as such, could heal without leaving too much scar tissue if cared for properly – extend underneath their clothes or are present only on the skin that was exposed at the time?
Because that would suggest their burns are accidental rather than on purpose, since I bet that if he really wanted to hurt them he could easily have set their clothing on fire with his powers…
Of course, even so, 2nd degree burns on 14% of their bodies is nothing to scoff at and will probably require a long time to heal and bring with it a lot of pain as well.
Considering that they are burned on the sides with which they were facing Hunter when the pulled their guns on him, I think it’s safe to say that he did, in fact, intentionally burn them. I don’t know if you’ve read the comic so this might be a little spoiler, but he kind of has a history of setting people and things on fire. It’s also th only thing that makes sense, since if someone has a gun pointed at you you’ll want to take them out, not just the room they’re in while keeping your fingers crossed that somehow the fire that isn’t even burning them will stop them from shooting you.
Also if those are second-degree burns, I will literally eat my own foot.
So far, I’ve seen Hunter set a lot of things on fire (mainly buildings), and a lot of people did get injured as a result, with he thug in “Lookback” getting a faceful of flaming alcohol for his troubles, but I’ve yet to see him actively trying to hurt people. Seems like all the tricks he pulls serve a mainly defensive purpose by discouraging people from trying to harm him with a “preview” of what might happen if they really do carry on trying.
The girls exhibiting burns on the sides closer to Hunter does make a lot of sense, since I imagine the first thing he did was produce a fireball from his cigar or some other party trick of his to make them drop the guns, but my point is that if he was really trying to hurt them he could have burned them a lot more than their current state seems to suggest. In fact, I think they got off relatively lightly when you think of all the things Hunter could have done to them had he really wished to do them harm.
I’ll grant you that both him and Vane are cheerfully amoral and don’t care too much about what happens to other people and their belongings. In fact, one could say that Vane, in her single-minded revengefulness is even more of a threat to the people around her than the pyrokinetic sociopath that is Hunter, since we’ve seen her shoot a blacksmith in the hand (which was, after all, his livelihood) just so that she would have access to his tools. She could have just as easily shot the ground in front of him to elicit the same effect, but she deliberately chose to blow his fingers off…
And, yes, I’m pretty sure those are mainly 2nd degree burns (both superficial and deep), because 1st degree burns are what you get from the sun after a long day at the beach without sunscreen and these look a bit more serious than that, while 3rd degree burns get all the way through the skin and, as such, take a dark brown or white coloration, not the red we can see in the picture… (there are also 4th degree burns, but those usually involve damage to the muscles, sometimes all the way to the bone, but that’s clearly not the case)
I could link you to some images, but you can google them for yourself if you’re curious. Be advised they are rather graphic in nature.
You mention him literally setting someone on fire in Lookback and immediately afterwards you claim that he’s never seen actively trying to hurt people. So the thug doesn’t count? Or the sherrif whose gun he blew up?
Hunter obviously intended to hurt them. Not necessarily kill them, but certainly hurt them. The fact that he could have hurt them more is completely irrelevant. The position of their burns clearly indicates that Hunter was the main source of fire that burned them, so he almost certainly intended to do so. He let them live and he could have done worse to them. And that’s irrelevant.
Vane shooting the blacksmith wasn’t deliberate, she was having a flashback that triggered her anger.
And those burns aren’t just red. There’s some gross purples and browns in there, too. They’re definitely not just 2nd degree burns. They’ve kinda got a two-face thing going on, almost. Comics, not movie.
I’m replying here, because I can’t go further down. Sorry if the conversation will seem a bit disjointed to those reading afterwards.
Ok, let me put it another way. What I mean to say is that Hunter reacts to threats, but doesn’t actively go out of his way to hurt people for shits and giggles. The thug had a knife to his throat, while the sheriff and the girls had guns trained on him. And even then he doesn’t use more force than is necessary to make the assailant to break of their attack. He exercises restraint, that’s the point I was gunning for.
However, I don’t think Vane shot the blacksmith because she lost situational awareness and ended up reacting mechanically to a flashback – sure, the flashback might have released some extra pent up anger because of the current situation’s correspondence to the earlier one, but the shooting itself was much too precise to be explained by a simple reaction to a delusion.
The hand is a very small target. Without rigorous training, once you move from the firing range and into a real life situation, you will have trouble hitting center of mass on a human sized target because of all the adrenaline that’s surging in you and the sensory overload under which you function at the moment. I remember the first time I went form the firing range to dynamic shooting my aim became abysmal for the first few times, so unless she simply shot blindly and pure dumb luck guided her bullet, I’d say his hand is exactly the point she was aiming for.
She does have extenuating circumstances though. She was tired, angry because Hunter had gotten away yet again and Diamonds was critically hurt, so it only took the small extra flare of anger produced by the flashback to move intro true amorality and decide she doesn’t care about the well-being of this guy that’s currently in her way and menacing her with a red hot piece of iron.
This is a phenomenon you see a lot in a combat situation, with soldiers that end up feeling absolutely no empathy towards another person they don’t know, like an enemy civilian or a captured soldier for example, because of their own anger, exhaustion and sometimes fear, thus using more force than necessary when dealing with them, including deadly force. This is why Archimedes died – he had the bad luck to be stumbled upon by a soldier who was tired, possibly angry at having lost friends in the prolonged siege, so when this enemy civilian arrogantly treated him as his inferior (in his perception) by asking him not to step on his drawing he snapped and killed him, just as Vane snapped and hurt the blacksmith.
BY way of contrast, Hunter is a lot more calculating in his reactions, and so far he has yet to lash out blindly at anyone.
Nope, still can see only 2nd degree burns there, but I cannot but think that it’s way easier to end this debate by asking Erin what kind of burns those are, since, after all, she drew them…
Oh, and by the way, some of the burns on Diamonds were 3rd degree by the look of them, even though there must have been some shrapnel damage there as well.
And considering it took him only a single night to be on his feet again after being injured and losing a leg, I’m curious to see how long will the girls have to stay in bad before being fit enough to rush after Hunter? Of course, we also don’t know exactly what Vane did to Diamonds that night, so maybe she has a secret for super fast healing that otherwise eludes the rest of the medical profession…
I shouldn’t encourage this goofy pedantic arguing over a fantasy webcomic, but I will point out
A) Vane’s work on Diamonds took several days, as called out in the book 2 dialogue, and any deep tissue damage was kind of irrelevant there since it was structurally replaced.
B) What makes you think the girls haven’t already been convalescing for days/weeks/etc..? They’re not bandaged. There’s no seepage, etc.. And the Baroness’ Madame isn’t one to casually pitch her assets without at least mulling it over.
C) I’m not arbitrating this; they are comic book degree burns.
Yeah, I do like to nitpick over things like this, as you’ve no doubly seen by now… I’d say that’s a very good sign for you as the author, because if people are willing to uselessly debate minor aspects of a work of fiction it means they are enthralled with the story, settings and characters.
But moving on- thanks for your timely intervention, it does clear a few things and cut this debate short.
A) Welp, that is something I must have missed when reading the comic (or I simply remembered it wrong), I was under the impression Vane spent a single night working on Diamonds. My mistake then.
B) On the contrary, I was pretty sure this scene takes place at least a few days later, since, after all, they had enough time not only to put out the fires, but to actively start rebuilding the bridge and the bathhouse/saloon/brothel. As an exercise in idle curiosity though, I’m still wondering how much time they’ll spend in bed overall, obviously including the time that has already elapsed from the incident.
C) Fair enough. Yeah, I know, expecting everything to work the way it does in real life in a comic involving fire magic, reanimated bounty hunters and steampunk horses is a bit on the wrong side of pedantry, even for a maniacal perfectionist such as myself.
Unfortunately, it’s not likely that they would survive those burns. While we’ve come full circle on keeping burns from drying out (they greased them back then, now they use gel) to heal them, burns tend to get infected. Assuming 1880s, the first antibiotics were about 40 years away.
Came back to the comments to find a GIANT WALL OF TEXT… knew without looking that it was WingsofWrath. And wait… did he have to have the last word? Lemme just scroll up here… Ayup.
Prostitutes in the wild west weren’t necessarily good looking, in fact many were downright hideous. Most men, usually fresh from a mine or other work, wouldn’t even bother taking their clothes off to have sex with a prostitute back in this time period and only cared that what they could afford had the right parts to match to theirs. 😛
In the working girls’ defense, there are always those weird Johns who prefer the afflicted. They could be Special Rates, being able to bring in enough for their support.
After they heal, of course ?
(I mention this only for argument’s sake. I don’t condone such activity. In fact, modern prostitution is abhorrent and slavery. However, this is irrelevant for this time period. Many times, the “easy girls” softened up the Old West towns, made them open to “honest women”, wives, later. In fact, many of the girls became wives themselves… Men get very protective of women when they only have a few around, if any at all! As it should be ?)

Well, they lived.
Looks like Hunter is going to have three vengeful redheads on his tail, now.
This is what happens when you don’t read the warning labels.
Redheads have warning labels, now? I must have missed that on my ex…
Play with fire, and you get burn!
Well this shows just how nasty Hunter is. He basically utterly ruined their lives without a second thought. Then he went to have a bath.

“when all you have is a flamethrower”
besides they had weapons to his head
Wow.
The opening panel made me feel like it was the morning after a terrible storm. That’s what Hunter and Vane are, together. A terrible storm.
The look on their faces suggests to me they just might, as TofuBot said, join the hunt for Hunter.
Unfortunately, it’s not likely that they would survive those burns. While we’ve come full circle on keeping burns from drying out (they greased them back then, now they use gel) to heal them, burns tend to get infected. Assuming 1880s, the first antibiotics were about 40 years away.
Two halves make a whore! Ah hah hah… I am going to Hell.
That was a whorrible thing to say. 🙁
you are whorifying people
This whole thread is whorrific.
They should have read their whorescope.
look like they’ve been dragged behind a whorse. maybe to cheer them up play a prostitune on a whoremonica

They just need to wear masks, right?? the rest can be handled with artful negligees!
At least she was kind enough to pay the doctor.
Looked more like Abe Lincoln. They’re probably suing for Workman’s Comp. 🙂
And my gamer inside me screams: “PWND !!!”. And as capt. Reynolds said (if Firefly is familiar): “whores should stick to whoring.”
Oh dammit, I need a “like it” button for Your comment!
Oh, those poor girls. :c
discount?
all I can say is the hooker boss obviously doesn’t offer health care in her business. I hope friend hunter comes back to visit her.
ahh… they asked for it! but it looks like vane’s really starting to pick up a posse.
poor hunter, just trying to make a living and stay out of trouble’s way… 😛
Came back to the comments to find a GIANT WALL OF TEXT… knew without looking that it was WingsofWrath. And wait… did he have to have the last word? Lemme just scroll up here… Ayup.
I don’t think this madame is thinking things through. She might have been able to hook in to a niche market with those two ladies.
Yikes, that’s gnarly. Good to know I can always count on NTO to make me cringe…in the best of ways! 😛
It’ll be interesting to see if and how these two decide to take up bounty hunting a la Vane.
I don’t get it.
Why doesn’t Hunter just burn the creepy zombie stalker to a cinder and be done with it? Clearly she’s after him and clearly she’s a danger.
Probably because he seems to have some kind of weird affection for her.

That may be, but let’s not forget the fact that the Baroness Bathhouse is supposed to be a fancy establishment!
The absolute first thing I thought when I saw them were the “ladies of the the evening” from Unforgiven.
Ah shoot. That’s bad.
In the working girls’ defense, there are always those weird Johns who prefer the afflicted. They could be Special Rates, being able to bring in enough for their support.
